Playing 'FarmVille' at Work Poses Security Risks, Cisco Study Claims
In a security report, Cisco claims that employees are breaking company policies by playing social networking games, and, by doing so, could be opening up networks to outside attacks. Cisco's 2010 Midyear Report found that 7-percent of those who admitted to using Facebook at work also fessed up to spending an average of 68 minutes each day playing 'FarmVille.' FarmVille isn't the only culprit; they also waste plenty of time playing 'Mafia Wars' (5-percent for 52 minutes each day) and 'Cafe World' (4-percent for 36 minutes each day). Aside from those effects on work productivity, Cisco also discovered that cybercriminals are working on ways to deliver malware via these games and applications. While no specific games were named, it makes sense that the most popular ones (i.e. 'FarmVille' and 'Mafia Wars') would be targeted. So if there weren't reasons enough for you to quit playing 'FarmVille,' you can kick this addiction for the good of your company's security. But, then again, as proven by this report, management can't simply rely on its

I've seen a lot of simple minded comments here. Sure, companys can fire everyone who plays Farmville...but who's next? The blond airhead flipping through the pages of a fashion magazine? Buba reading "Field and Stream"? The guys by the loading dock smoking their 25 cigarette of the day on their unauthorized "break". I say if it's your lunch hour, spend it as you please. If you aren't on break, get back to work and tell the twit filing her nails in the cubicle beside you to do the same. On a more important note...Cisco's only business is to make the Internet run...take away the games, etc. and we will all do something productive with our time and they will be out of business.

Employees are there to WORK----not play games or read magazines. At my job you get canned for using a cellphone during work time, too.

I can't believe how many people are addicted to Farmville. It's puzzling! I am not a fan of Facebook or any other sites like it. I don't think it is wise to share your personal information on these sites. I feel it can jeapardize the security on your computer and your privacy. Also, these employees that get caught more than once using these sites deserve to be fired. You are not getting paid to play. It's OK if you check your email once in a while but to play games for 68 minutes a day, not smart if you want to keep your job.
