Prisoners May Lose Their Cell Phone Privileges, If Congress Has Its Way
America's killers and drug dealers might soon find themselves without even a cell phone to distract them from the everyday rigors of federal penitentiaries. As of right now, cell phones and wireless gadgets aren't classified as contraband by federal law, and prisoners found in possession of them are hardly ever punished. In a vote yesterday, though, the House of Representatives decided to close that loophole, echoing the sentiments of a similarly hard-lined bill that the Senate had already passed. As the AP reports, the proposed legislation would also impose a one-year jail sentence on anyone who attempts to provide cell phones to inmates. According to a recent study conducted in California, prisoners often pay anywhere from $500 to $1,000 to get their hands on a burner, and one corrupt officer reportedly made $150,000 in one year simply by selling phones to inmates. Why are prisoners so eager to talk on a cell from their cell? One explanation could be that inmates are required to dial collect (and pay more money) when making real calls to family or friends. California Senator Dianne Feinstein, who sponsored the Senate bill, also argued that many inmates use their mobiles to conduct criminal business from within prison confines. Of course, anyone familiar with the Barksdale Organization knows that criminals will still probably find a way to do business from the pen -- with or without their own phones. If Congress's plan comes to fruition, though, they'll just have to find more creative ways to do so. [From: AP]

Why afford prisoners anything?????Were some "goodies" taken away, such as a/c, tv, cell phones, etc. people would think before committing crimes. They could be outside cleaning up roadways, mowing, etc., saving money for the states.
Prisoners get good dental care. The caregivers are state employees, getting many perks! These prisoners would not be getting dental care if they were outside the prison. We have "POOR" people who cannot afford dental care so why should we provide for prisoners?
I'm tired of my tax dollars being spent on people who commit crimes and then have "The Life of Riley," when they go to prison.

Another cause for the ACLU to fight for. They got it to where prisons have to allow the inmates to have porn and cable TV, so why not cell phones.

What a tangled web we weave, If man kind had followed God's word like we should have things would be ALOT different now, but thats not the case. So we have to carry on till he returns. And those that do evil shall pay for their sins, so the word states. But the word says that forgiviness of sins is available to anyone, but a price still has to be paid. That means that while still here on earth we pay a price for our sins. But we can live ever after in the life to come. Like people who hurt, and rip off others must answer for what they do. But it seems that nowdays to many people have gone to soft on those that hurt others. What ever happened to the old chain gang, that was a time when those who hurt others did not want to go to jail. But now days as another reader said, they have it made in prison. We are faced with an over crowed prison system, rampent crime, Governments that have allowed Gods name to be removed from almost every facet of life, school drop out rates soaring, schools placing more emphasis on teaching others things than making sure that our kids learn the basic's first. Is it anywonder that our family structure is under constant attack, and now we have states allowing same sex marriage. We have traded everything good for the old verbage " lets not offend anyone ". Those that believe in this verbage are lying to themselves and others, they believe that this will be a cure all and that this represents love. But true love is when you tell others that they are doing something wrong, " Known as tough love "and that we have a way that we do things in this country. And not that we don't welcome anyone to come to this country, but that we have not asked them to help change our way of life. I'm one of those who still believe that America was founded on God's principals.

The man who severely abused and kidnapped my daughter (twice)& abused my grand children is currently serving a sentence in Fl. He is stalking my daughter and grand children on Facebook. This is Due to him buying a Cell phone from a prison guard. FB name he has i saw it.
My grand daughter and grandson are also being stalked by him. (their father) My young grand daughter is terrified.(she told me)There's also a NO contact order by the FL.courts, plus restraining orders( lifetime). You would think after serving half of his sentence he would leave My family alone "no"
So, I will take this once again to the State Attorney and hope and pray they add time to his sentence. He is a sociopath. A very very sick man. He will never allow my daughter or my family alone His type should be given LIFE !!! I pray that he doesn't get out in 3 yrs. The torment, abuse ,and fear has started all over again!! NOTHING LIKE TERRORIZING YOUR VICTIMS WHILE BEHIND BARS!!

Prisoners should be allowed to wrap all day with others outside of jail, how do you expect them to keep track of drug deals and other illegal activity, so when they leave they can be self supporting.

Everyone is thinking of the loss of Cell Phones as punishment for them. The real purpose here IS "punishment" for inmates.
These individuals have committed CRIMES. They are supposed the get punishment. Inmates have too many rights as it is! The Courts are crowded with meritless lawsuits filed by inmates, using our resources to do it. Why can they file lawsuits? Did not commiting a crime mean that, as prisoners, they lost rights that honest Citizens retain.
We, the "taxpayers", bear the costs to house, feed, an clothe them.
The costs to keep one prisoner in jail for a year, far exceed what a great many of us earn in a year. Why is PUNISHMENT not PUNISHMENT any more?
