Teen Barters Old Cell Phone on Craigslist to Eventually Land a Porsche

As the San Gabriel Valley Tribune reports, Ortiz began scouring through Craigslist's barter section when he was just 15, looking for anyone willing to take his phone in exchange for something else. He finally traded his old mobile for a better one, then traded that phone for an iPod Touch. He bartered the iPod for a dirt bike, and eventually obtained a whole fleet of cars. Among the vehicles that passed through Ortiz's garage was a 1975 Ford Bronco, which is reportedly something of a collector's item. Two years after beginning his barter bonanza, the 17-year-old became the proud owner of a 2000 Porsche Boxster S. The sports car, in fact, was actually worth $9,000 -- about $6,000 less than Ortiz' Bronco. But we're pretty sure that being able to wheel that thing around his high school parking lot far exceeds any monetary loss.
Ortiz's story will likely elicit comparisons to Kyle MacDonald, the Canadian who famously traded a red paperclip, and eventually earned himself a farmhouse in 2006. Ortiz, however, insists that he'd never heard of MacDonald before embarking upon his own Craigslist quest; he just stumbled upon the barter tab on the classified ads site and was hooked. And, while his story has led some (including his own relatives) to brand Ortiz as a con artist, both Steven and his father, Esteban, dismiss all such speculation. "People just make these trades," Steven says, "I am not lying to anyone."
Not surprisingly, Ortiz is looking to trade his new Porsche, as the costs of maintaining his ride have been weighing heavily upon his bank account. So, if you're in the market for a Boxster, you might want to search him out on Craigslist -- but you'll certainly have to bring a lot to the table. [From: SGVTribune, via: CNET]

Eh, he's 15....can't drive it. And a 1975 Ford Bronco is a collector's item?

He's actually 17 - the article says he was fifteen when he started browsing craiglist.

You must not have scored highly in reading comprehension in school. This was a paragraph long and you missed a key point.

This whole article should be fact checked.

I thought I was good for once trading my old cell phone for a nintendo ds, a ps2 slim, a few games and a new cell phone... I need to take lessons from this kid!

Classic example of be careful what you wish for, you might get it.

It says in the original article that he spent 5 to 6 hours each day looking for trades. So basically, after 2 years, working 5 to 6 hours each day, he got a $9000 car. So he was working for about $2 an hour. Yeah, this kid is a genius.

And..... it's not as if at 15-17 years old your rockin a real job... plus what he learned will be invaluable in the real world in his not so distant future. Instead of being in teenage waste land... Bored teenager (staying out of mischief and trouble) on Craig's List... $0......Negotiates/trades an old cell phone up to a Porsche... $2.00 per hour..... Learned negotiating skills and experience... PRICELESS

Me too. Anyone want to trade me for my red paperclip to get me started?
Jay LoveJul 21st 2010 5:27PM
despite all the negative coments here I feel this kid is pretty resourceful and smart. what he has learned will serve him well throughout life in the business world I would think?

A 2000 Porche that's worth only $9000 probably doesn't have an engine. Something is definetely wrong with this whole scenario.
JoshJul 21st 2010 6:31PM
This kids retarded. He traded a car that was worth 6,000 dollars less than the car he owned. Why didn't he SELL his Car and buy a better porsche with the 6,000k he gave up in trading it. Sounds like the guy that the got the bronco got a pretty good deal and the kid got shafted.

I am glad to see the savvy in this young man. Many college grads couldn't have done that. He has a good head on how to deal & deal up. This young man could do great w/ the stock market, a few years of higher education (business & finance) behind him and look out, he might be on his way to bartering himself his own state, there are quite a few in deep financial trouble.
