American Eagle Offers Free* Smartphone to Anyone Who Tries on a Pair of Jeans

If you're a clothing retailer struggling to come to terms with your own intrinsic lameness, you might want to take a page from American Eagle's marketing playbook. According to the AP, the retailer will soon be offering a free smartphone to anyone who tries on a pair of its trademark jeans. That's right. All you have to do is try on a pair of jeans, and you'll be able to choose between a new Droid Eris, BlackBerry Curve, or LG Ally. (The iPhone, of course, is conspicuously absent.) Of course, there is a glaring catch. To get the smartphone, you'll have to sign a new two-year service contract. But, you'll get a $25 American Eagle gift card, too! (You should be able to get $5 for that, easy.) The offer kicks off on July 21st, and wraps up on August 3rd.

Considering American Eagle's largely youthful consumer base, this seems like a smart carrot to dangle in front of a bunch of text-hungry teens. And news of the campaign already seems to be paying dividends, as American Eagle's shares rose 14 cents yesterday to 14 cents $11.95. It may seem like a desperate cry for attention, and it most likely is, but the offer of a free BlackBerry might be sufficient cause for even us to wander into our nearest American Eagle outlet. Or, maybe not. [From: Huffington Post/AP]
