Finding Faces Easier With Facebook's New Face Detection (Too Much 'Face' For Us)
Facebook is one of the largest repositories of user-generated photos online. Many, it seems, dump every family snapshot and vacation photo into the site, but then must deal with the unpleasantness of tagging people who appear in the images. Sure, it's not a particularly difficult task, but drawing a box around each person, in each photo, and then typing their name can get pretty tedious. [Ed. Note: Gosh, how did people survive before Facebook!? Did they use charcoal and mud for writing?] Facebook has taken a small step toward simplifying that process by adding automated face-detection.A new version of the photo upload tool is currently being tested, and aims to automatically identify and mark peoples' faces, thus eliminating one of the steps in the photo-tagging process. Of course, you'll still have to type in that particular face's name, but we imagine that automatic identification will be on its way soon enough. After all, Picasa has had that feature since late 2008. We haven't seen face detection on our Facebook accounts yet, so, if you do have access, let us know what you think of it in the comments. Stupid idea. I hate when friends tag photos of me and now it's going to be automatic?!

Add it to the list of dumb ideas. Wonder if they will block you from using that feature too if their system determines you do it too often or too fast?

just getting us more accustomed to a "1984" lifestyle and thinking its great. NO THANKS. we are like frogs in a pan of water not feeling the heat being SLOWLY turned up... keep your draconian technology to yourself.

I have actually seen this feature pop up in the top right part of the screen, but I do NOT like it as I am a portrait photographer and while parents don't mind - they actually LOVE to be able to access their children's portraits via facebook - as long as you don't give out the child's name and location. There is still a large portion of the population who don't feel comfortable with anyone posting their children's portraits along with the names of each child. Too many sicko's out there who may come hunting a child with the intent to kidnap children. I try to only add parents' names who specifically have asked to see their children's portraits online - especially the portraits that have been used in commercial advertisements. Everyone loves the bragging rights that their child's portrait has wound up chosen by a large company with a large customer base. I don't LIKE to use the automated recognition feature on children, but it doesn't FORCE you to enter a name and you can simply ignore the entire section.
