Mom Forces Google to Blur Street View Pic of Her Son's Bum, Dooms His Viral Fame

"I just felt sick to my stomach," Rowlands told the Daily Mail, asserting she was primarily concerned that pedophiles might use the image of her son's tuchus for devious purposes. Within an hour of receiving Rowlands's complaint, Google promptly blurred the image, and apologized for its oversight of the hind sight.
Seriously, though. How many pedophiles really flock to Google Maps to hunt for fresh, pre-school meat? Besides, doesn't she realize that this could've been her son's ultimate claim to fame? Dude could've used this as a barstool opening line for the rest of his life. If he'd written a maudlin college application essay about the trauma of being involuntarily exposed to the world at such a tender age, he'd be an Ivy League shoo-in, no doubt. Instead, he's just another faceless, crackless blip on Google Maps' radar. [From: DailyMail, via: Gizmodo]

Why is it legal for google to have pictures of peoples houses without consent?
LuisJul 1st 2010 9:52AM
Because it's viewable from the street, public space. You can take as many pictures or videos you want from a public space.
dodmarti187Jul 2nd 2010 11:37AM
Because people do not have a reasonable expectation of privacy with respect to the exterior of their homes under the law. It is open for anyone to look at, even Google.

Luis is correct. Also, if you don't want people seeing your son naked in the street, I don't know, don't let him run naked in front of the house?
Also, how could this shot be even remotely sexualized?

why would the mother, grandmother or any other family member are letting the kid roam naked through the yard... ? Specially if you are worried about pedophiles.
ScottJul 4th 2010 10:30AM
Amen to that. You cannot be angry about a photo displaying what was casual PUBLIC expression of nudity. If she didn't want her child photographed naked, she should not let him be naked in public.
WmLawsonJul 6th 2010 5:54PM
Really! She has some gall in throwing a hissy fit about Google photographing views from the street, while allowing the child to run about in the raw to begin with.
I think she's either being hysterical, or out for attention. Anyone that concerned shouldn't allow their child to run around nude outside.
I find it unlikely that pedophiles would be trawling around Google Street View with its low-quality pics anyway. But then, I'm not one of them, and I don't much care who looks at what pics so long as they don't actually touch anyone under age.

No comment on the fact that son was naked out front in the first place. I'm sure the pedophile across the street now has some unblurred photos...

My guess is the mother was using the son as pedophile-bait, and is just pissed that Google caught her shameful parenting on camera.
KazooieJul 4th 2010 5:30AM
What's the problem with kids being out naked in the Anglo-Saxon world? It works perfectly fine everywhere else, no harm done. Get reasonable.
You've got some serious issues to sort out.
