Jason Bateman Cuts in Apple Store Line, Heats Up iPhone 4 Frustration
Apple's iPhone 4 launch has been beset by a growing line of failures, which has only been emphasized by the company's patronizing response to the "Antenna Attenuation" controversy. (Seriously, how many casual consumers know what "attenuation" means?) Following the company's pre-order collapse, iPhone-purchasing issues reached a release-day nadir with low inventories, unavailable gadgets, and interminable lines of foul and ornery consumers. iPhone 4 campers in Los Angeles found a release for their anger, though, when an Apple Store employee decided that celebrities trump the unwashed masses. According to NY Mag, the sycophant noticed actor Jason Bateman toward the end of a 2,000-strong line, and immediately escorted him into the store. The waiting plebeians fittingly greeted Bateman's exit with a hearty round of boos. Such activity might be expected from some Hollywood halfwits, but for someone who admirably resurrected his career by playing the sole sane member of a disjointed family, this episode elicits supreme disappointment. Boo, we say! Boo! [From: NY Mag]

No one would care if it was the Pope or Rupert Murdoch who got moved to the front. He's a celebrity and, in this society, celebrities win.
He wasn't the only one getting special treatment.

I may be the sole dissenter on the Switched team, but I was not so bothered by this.
All the Apple fanboys and girls who braved the heat and ridiculous lines did so voluntarily. It's not like Bateman was cutting in line at a soup kitchen. And do you really think he asked to go to the front? Apple employees probably saw him and whisked him to the front because he's a celeb. Blame Apple for playing favorites for PR, not Bateman for being famous.
Gabe at Videogum makes a good case for Bateman:

Mr. Bateman may not have ASKED for the special treatment, but where does is say that he REFUSED it? That fancy-schmancy famous bastard COULD have said "no," BUT HE DID NOT!!!!
THEREFORE, he is worthy of all the scorn that he received!
And so, I say that in retaliation, we should ALL (NO exceptions!) BOYCOTT all video stores/rental outlets that CARRY anything at all that Jayscum Bateman ever appeared in! And permanently boycott the store that gave him "special treatment" too!

Sorry for the typo, I meant to say "where does IT,' rather than "where does IS".
userbub12487Jun 25th 2010 10:31PM
guy's famous so therefore he's ENTITLED
DEJun 25th 2010 10:38PM
Jpuzzlewhiz, you're a huge spaz, just calm down. It's annoying, but we should all feel a little stupid being grown adults standing in line for a glorified toy. If you were dumb enough to be caught in one of those lines instead of ordering online or waiting a week or two, you deserve everything you get. If I go to an opening night blockbuster movie, I know I'm going to have to deal with waits, disappointments and crappy seats. So deal with it and have fun, or wait and avoid the frustration.

WERE I COME FROM HE WOULD OF GOT HIS ASS KICKED FOR DOING IT , INVITED OR NOT! HE SHOULD OF SAID NO ILL WAIT LIKE THE REST OF THE LINE!
RichardJun 25th 2010 3:07PM
All that for a phone. Sad, really sad.
Tracie SmithJun 25th 2010 3:05PM
Typical celeb...thinks the rules don't apply to them, just us peons...
JackieJun 25th 2010 5:37PM
I never heard of this guy.
MarcusJun 25th 2010 4:34PM
Jackie...
You need to get out a little bit more. He's starred in half a dozen movies in the last 18 months. Starred in Arrested Development for three seasons. But, don't worry about it--lots of people I don't know either. It's a big world.
JackieJun 25th 2010 5:41PM
Someone should kick your @$$ Capwhen for being drunk and attempting to sound intelligent. I said, "I never heard of this man" not someone should of kicked his @$$. You Capwhen, are dumber than a sack of hammers.
DEJun 25th 2010 10:49PM
He's done a lot of stuff, but he's known for a TV show called Arrested Development. It wasn't very popular while it ran, but since it was canceled it has become really popular. It's probably one of the funniest shows ever.
dickn2000bJun 25th 2010 3:12PM
As I've suspected for years, Justin Bateman is just another cretin with a superiority complex who thinks by being a celebrity he has privliege and power.
dianeJun 25th 2010 7:36PM
You haven't been paying attention. They do. When all is said and done, he got the phone, didn't he?
Cynthia B.Jun 25th 2010 4:29PM
I think that I would have immediately gotten out of that line!
KeithJun 25th 2010 9:05PM
The outrage should stem from the following. If it was less than 50 people in line, well it's a perk celebs here in LA get all the time. But a line of 2,000? Jason should have refused or just went home and send a minion to do the waiting.
Jean BaileyJun 25th 2010 3:20PM
Never heard of this guy. If he's so popular as an actor, why didn't he have some one else stand in line for him?
whendrknesscallsJun 25th 2010 3:20PM
by the tone of the articule, seems if someone is the bad guy in that incident,it should be the store employee.Im not so sure some of us wouldnt jump line if offered the chance.that being said tho,yea not a totally classy or thoughtful thing to do.
nowitsmineJun 25th 2010 3:21PM
C'mon people. Don't blame HIM. If a clerk walked up to YOU and offered to escort you right in to the store, how many of you would have declined?
