Cell Phone Towers Not a Cancer Risk for Kids, Study Claims

Cell Phone Tower BabyWhile cell phone towers might be unsightly, British researchers are claiming, in a recently released study, that they do not increase a child's chances of developing cancer. Reuters reports that researchers looked at 7,000 children under the age of 4, some of them with and some without cancer, and found no patterns that linked living near a cell phone tower to childhood cancer.

The study, which is the largest of its kind to date, looked at 1,400 cancer cases between 1999 and 2001, and at 5,600 children without cancer. Next, the researchers checked to see if the mothers of these children had lived near a cell phone tower while pregnant. As it turned out, there was no pattern that suggests pregnant women who lived near a cell phone tower increased the risk that their kids would one day develop cancer. In fact, lead researcher Paul Elliott told the Associated Press that a person would be exposed to as much radiofrequency from a cell phone tower in one day as he or she would be in 30 minutes of cell phone usage.

Despite this study's claims, and countless other 'definitive' ones, cellular technology is still fairly young, and it will take years before we know for sure what ill effects, if any, those countless hours of chatting or living under a giant steel tower has on us.
