Artist Imagines Gadget Ads Circa 1977, Figures Lots of Faux Wood Grain

The Pocket Hi-Fi
Imagine you've discovered the secret to time travel. What world-changing (or, possibly, destroying) shenanigans would you get up to? Apparently, if you were Alex Varanese, you'd carry modern-day technology back to 1977 and dominate the personal electronics market. (Personally, Alex, we think that's a brilliant idea.) Varanese's latest art project imagines what ads for modern gadgets might look like if they were being hawked by time travelers 33 years ago.

There's a laptop, a digital audio player, a cell phone and a portable gaming system -- all staples of your average person's life in 2010. The posters feature images of the items, clad in '70s-esque faux wood grain, flush with excessively warm orange and yellow hues. The ads are complete with coy copy about not being developed by time travelers, and feature great slogans such as: "Like any other phone. But without the wall attached."
