Shawn Smith's 'Pixelated' Sculptures, An In-Depth Look at iPhone 4's New Camera

There's a load of great tech news happening out there every day, and, unfortunately, we just can't cover it all. Here are a few of the other noteworthy things we saw today on our never-ending journey through the wild, wild Web.
  • The pixel is the new Ben-Day dot for 21st-century Lichtensteins. Seeing as nearly 100-percent of our media culture is transmitted through the pixel, it comes as no surprise that these atoms of color have come to represent the lens through which we view our world. And artists make no small use of them, either; Shawn Smith, for example, builds sculptures from 3/4-inch cubes of plywood glued together. "Through the process of pixilation, color is distilled, some bits of information are lost, and the form is abstracted," says Smith. Whoa, hey! Pointilism! [From: Technabob]
  • Whether or not you subscribe to Chase Jarvis' iPhone camera philosophy, shutterbugs have to admit that cell phone camera tech is only getting better. But will the iPhone 4's new specs live up to Steve Jobs' magical claims at this year's WWDC? Ars Technica takes an in-depth look for serious photogs at the new phone's jam-packed pixel density, LED flash, front-facing camera and HD video capabilities. The conclusion? Yeah, it's pretty sweet.   • Matt Rosoff over at CNET is a big fan of the indie vinyl resurgence of late, but he's got some issue with these pretty young things putting out their music willy-nilly in a format with time-tested standards. His gripes include: the included coupons are complicated, or sometimes he doesn't know which side is A or B. And these bands are just making things too danged arty! That may make Rosoff seem like an old fogey but, judging from his byline photo, he is not. We'll agree, though, that putting warped vinyl on record store shelves is a major faux pas. [From: CNET]
