U.K. Power Plug Can Be Yanked by the Cord, Moms Breathe Easy

UK Cord Yank
We've always been told to never pull a plug from its socket by yanking on the cord. Doing so, rather than grabbing the housing and gently tugging, can expose dangerous wires. Line up a U.S. wire and strategically pull (not that we've ever done that!), and most plugs will pop out. The unmanageably large sockets and housings in the U.K., though, simply can't be detached in one piece from the wall by pulling on the cord. These are necessary safety cautions, of course, but Apple's MagSafe power adapters have shown that yank-safe cords can work.

British designer Konstantinos Ladas created a three-prong plug that can be yanked from the wall (complete with a small red ball that acts as a handhold) due to an internally reinforced cable and sturdy PVC housing. Aside from saving you the extreme effort of having to reach behind or underneath a piece of furniture to directly unplug a device, this plug can prevent accidents. Apple's MagSafe has probably saved millions in expensive laptops from crashing to the ground, and it's about time for our lamp to simply detach from the wall as we trip over its cord for the millionth time.
