Nokero Solar-Powered N100 Bulb Could Offer Kerosene Lantern Alternative
A new solar light bulb could be a safer and more affordable lighting option for people who live in developing nations. According to CNET News, the Nokero N100 solar LED bulb can provide up to four hours of light on a single charge -- making it the world's first solar-powered light bulb. The N100 is about the size of your average incandescent bulb, but the green plastic housing holds four solar panels, five LEDs and a replaceable battery. Nokero, a Hong-Kong company, hopes this bulb will replace kerosene lanterns as a lighting source, which the company says are still used by billions of people worldwide. Not only is burning fossil fuels for lighting dangerous, but it's also costly. The N100 costs just $15 and should last 10 years. However, the duration of its burning time largely depends on weather conditions. Unless you're living on the equator, one day of charging will probably only get you about two hours of burn time that evening, making it a tough sell as a primary lighting source. I’m sorry to say I purchased three of these Nokero bulbs to try out. I’ve only charged one, and it worked very briefly. However, the on/off switch felt wobbly and cheap from the beginning, and now it doesn’t turn on at all. For the usage they contemplate, everything about it must be solid and sturdy. I hope that anyone who contemplates buying them in bulk and adding their own logos does some testing first.
