Highlights from this morning's other big tech headlines....
  • The White House apparently harbors numerous, and already devoted, fans of the iPad, including Vice President Biden, economic adviser Larry Summers and several members of the press staff. They also all seem to be serious procrastinators, as 'Scrabble,' 'Lost' and 'Vanity Fair' rank among the assorted downloads. 'Vanity Fail?' Pfffttt. n00bs. [From: Gizmodo]
  • Despite the calls to "Drill, Baby, Drill" from certain folks with negligible technological backgrounds, a powerful team of scientific heavyweights is imploring Washington to revolutionize energy development in the United States. Under the leadership of Bill Gates, General Electric's Jeffrey R. Immelt, Lockheed Martin's Norman R. Augustine, Xerox's Ursula M. Burns and many others, the American Energy Innovation Council is imploring Washington to modernize research and development by tripling government spending to $16 billion a year. • Social games like 'FarmVille' and 'Mafia Wars' continue to attract millions of new users, while earning serious revenue, but the recession hasn't been so kind to other online realms. Having already suffered through a virtual banking collapse, the once formidable 'Second Life' now faces an uncertain and distressing future (at least for its real employees), as developer Linden Labs plans to dismiss 30-percent of its work force. • Microsoft already revealed plans to invigorate Bing's Destination Maps feature this week, and today the company will reportedly also implement a new search engine integration. Publicly shared links and public Fan Pages from Facebook will now appear in Bing search results, making it increasingly important to update those privacy settings and exercise discretion when posting links. • Steam offers an incredible array of both classic and new video games, and Mac users just received access to the awesome service last month. Starting tomorrow, Steam will reportedly provide those Apple owners with Valve's 'Team Fortress 2' for $19.99. [From: Joystiq]
  • With the Evo 4G and the iPhone 4, the smartphone market now boasts superior, although highly expensive, superphones. For consumers who can't afford, or don't need, such high-powered and high-priced devices, AT&T is awesomely and amazingly offering the Palm Pixi Plus for free with a $15 data plan. [From: Engadget]
