Gritty 'Mortal Kombat' Movie Test Footage Posted on YouTube

Mortal Kombat test footage
According to CHUD, an eight-minute clip of test footage for a new 'Mortal Kombat' movie was posted on YouTube Tuesday. With next week's E3 looming, it was originally speculated that the clip could be a teaser for a new video game. But, as it turns out, the footage, which was directed by Kevin Tancharoen, is supposed to convince Warner Bros. to greenlight another full-length adaptation of the popular video game series.

Before you groan and beg the wizards of Hollywood for mercy, watch the clip after the break. There's no denying that past 'Mortal Kombat' films were terrible, but judging from this clip, Tancharoen's film version of the fighting game could erase those others from our memory. It shows Jax, a cop, questioning a shadowy guy in an interrogation room. While talking to the perp, Jax introduces a flesh-eating Reptile, a terrifying Baraka, a handsome Johnny Cage and a younger Shang Tsung. If given the go-ahead, it looks like Tancharoen will forgo the series' campy roots in favor of a more realistic, gritty and gory 'Mortal Kombat.'

We aren't ready to buy advance tickets just yet, but there's definitely some promise here. Leaking this footage is the perfect way to measure gamers' reactions to another film installment. With the world's largest video game expo taking place in Los Angeles next week, the buzz surrounding the possibility of an 'MK' reboot will only get bigger.
