Man Avenges Speeding Ticket by Buying Expired Police Department URL
When Brian McCrary got ticketed for speeding in Bluff City, Tennessee, he got mad -- but he also got even. Upset because he was caught by a police speed camera placed on U.S. Highway 11E, McCrary decided to go to the Bluff City Police Department's Web site to ask a question about his $90 fine. While there, he noticed that the site's domain name was about to expire. Opportunist that he apparently is, McCrary decided to buy it up for himself, officially securing his place in the pantheon of online vengeance. Now, as the owner of http://www.bluffcitypd.com, McCrary uses the forum to post links and complaints about speed cameras. And, it appears that he's found a pretty substantial fan base, as the site has already accrued over 1,200 unique hits since he took the reins on May 22nd. "It's kind of surprising that they'd just let it lapse like that," the new domain owner told TriCities.com. "I figured they would be aware [it was about to expire] and renew it on their own."
Ultimately, the police department has only itself to blame for allowing the domain to slip from its hands. GoDaddy.com, the company that administered rights to the name, sent a series of warning e-mails to the office to warn them that the domain was about to expire, and then several more even after it had already expired. Bluff City Police Chief David Nelson, however, says, "It just slipped my mind. If you open up a Web site and let it go down, somebody can buy it – I did not know that."
McCrary's bold payback, however, didn't come for free. He had to pay an extra $80 for the rights, in addition, of course, to his speeding fine. But the feedback he's received thus far has been so overwhelming, he's confident that "this camera thing will come to an end." [From: TriCities.com and TGDaily]

Should point out those who are saying that the website provided info to people. If Brian saw that the site was about to expire, then it was already past the point in which a site was still active. So if they didn't pay to renew the domain they probably didn't pay to renew the web hosting as well.
Is what he did childish? Maybe. The article didn't say he was trying to get out of the ticket. It said "McCrary decided to go to the Bluff City Police Department's Web site to ask a question about his $90 fine."
Don't jump to conclusions. If the PD were responsible they wouldn't let their website get to that point. It had to be more than 90 days expired for this guy to purchase it.

someone should buy bluffcitypd.net and bluffcitypd.org if Bluff City PD goes for those web domains.

This guy is just being childish. Personally, I am always doing about 5 over the speed limit, and have never gotten a ticket. He must have been going way over that to incite the wrath of the Camera Patrol.
Being King of the Assholes must make Brian feel really good about himself.

I wonder if this guy can be taken to court for obstruction of justice or something like that.
He has made his point, albeit childish and a little of the tantrum nature. I think its time the law show be allowed to make its point too.

I'd rather the police use cameras on the highways and focus their individual efforts on violent crime prevention where good police work is necessary. A camera can enforce traffic laws - A camera CAN'T investigate a homicide.

Fine and all, but when will the day PD will be fined for breaking the speed limit eh? They should be JUST as safe. I love seeing them turn their flashers on just to get through a stoplight/sign, roll stop signs, have their lights off, don't signal the list goes on...oh and yes speed like nobody’s business. "above the law?"

People... he broke the law. And he is whining about getting caught. I have sped before. And I have also gotten pulled over for speeding. And I paid my fine... because I broke the law. I don't see what people have against speed cameras. It frees the police up for more important issues. I'd rather have officers policing my neighborhood than spending all their time on speeders.
