James Cameron Confirms 'Titanic' 3-D Release for Ship's 100th Anniversary
After having conquered the box office record books with 'Titanic,' and then doing it again with 'Avatar' 13 years later, world-renowned nutjob James Cameron will once again attempt to climb the mountain of over-the-top cinema, by re-releasing 'Titanic' in 3-D. At the D8: All Things Digital Conference yesterday, Cameron took some time out of his busy schedule of money counting to sit down with CNET News. Somewhere between talking about all things James Cameron, Hollywood, and James Cameron, the director was asked about the possibility of a 3-D Titanic re-release. Mincing no words, he responded, "We're not thinking about doing that, we're doing it. We'll have it ready for the ship's 100th anniversary."
The announcement will almost certainly raise the eyebrows of a moviegoing public that may have had enough of Cameron--and 3-D movies--for one decade. But the director insists he knows the "right way" to do incorporate 3-D into a big screen production. "There are ways to do it well and there are ways to do it poorly, and I think we have seen examples of both; mostly the latter," the sage proclaimed.
We'd be a lot more excited if Cameron was planning on giving us 'Terminator' into three-dimensions, but he says the future of any other 3-D re-releases will largely depend on how fans receive his 'Titanic' redux. "We're going to spend months and millions converting 'Titanic',"' Cameron mumbled while staring at himself in a mirror. "But if we do lousy jobs of conversions, 'pop-up book style', that's going to get old quickly." Re-living the glory of cash cow melodramas, on the other hand, will never get old.
