China Foursquare Ban Linked to Tiananmen Square Anniversary

foursquare in china Really, it was only a matter of time. China already blocks Facebook, Twitter and Google, so it's no surprise to see the geolocation-based social game Foursquare added to that list. Details surrounding the censorship are not entirely clear, as with most things coming out of the country. It is widely believed, however, that the blockage is connected to the 21st anniversary of the massacre at Tiananmen Square.

According TechBlog86, which covers social networking and technology news out of China, there has been a spike in Foursquare members "checking in" at Tian'anmen Square. It's believed that many have been using Foursquare as a way of showing solidarity with Chinese dissidents. The blockage may only be temporary, until the anniversary passes and "visits" to the site of the infamous massacre of student protesters quiets down.

However, Foursquare may join the ranks of the permanently banned. Like Twitter or other social networks, it's hard for the oppressive government to control the flow of information across the service. It's much easier for the powers that be to simply (and sadly) block the entire site. [From: Telegraph]
