'NHL Slapshot' Comes With Wii Hockey Stick, Wayne Gretzky Endorsement

Gretzy and His Wii Stick NHL legend Wayne Gretzky is making a comeback, but, this time, it's in video games. According to Joystiq, Gretzky is endorsing EA's 'NHL Slapshot' game for the Nintendo Wii, and that means he's also supporting the latest in a long line of weird Wii peripherals -- a plastic hockey stick. The scaled-down stick comes packaged with the game, which features Gretzky on the cover and as a playable character. Moving the plastic stick in different directions creates slap shots, wrist shots, body checks and poke checks, while pressing buttons on the Wiimote performs passes and other moves on the ice. Not only is Gretzky's inclusion big news, but 'NHL Slapshot,' which will be released September 7th, also marks EA's first hockey game for the Wii. [Ed. Note: Also, this is perfect for those of us who are currently consumed by the Stanley Cup. Objective journalism aside, this Chicago-born editor has to cheer: Go Blackhawks!]

Though sports games don't always translate well onto the Wii (the 'Madden' series being prime evidence), we wouldn't mind giving 'Slapshot' a try, so long as we're guaranteed not to break any teeth (or TV screens) while playing it. [From: Joystiq, via: Engadget and Load This]
