Facebook and Google Maps Reign as Most Popular Smartphone Apps

The Nielsen Company recently conducted a survey of more than 4,200 people who had downloaded an app in the 30 days prior to the study, and Facebook reigns as the most widely downloaded application. Not far behind, though, was the Google Maps app, which was most popular among Android users, in particular; 67-percent of them had downloaded the app within the specified time frame. Rounding out the list of the most popular downloads are the Weather Channel and ESPN apps, as well as Pandora and iTunes. There are some interesting demographic quirks in Nielsen's study, as well. Facebook may be the most common social networking app on a global basis, but among teenagers, MySpace is still wildly popular. Meanwhile, LinkedIn attracted mostly 25- to 44-year-old users.
As Nielsen points out, smartphones are expected to overtake traditional cell phones by 2011, so these kinds of statistics will likely become increasingly important barometers to app marketers and developers. The fact that Facebook and Google Maps are so popular probably doesn't come as a surprise to most, though. After all, Facebook's already one of the most popular Web sites in the world, and fewer apps are more handy for lost city wanderers than Google Maps. As apps become increasingly sophisticated, though, and as the palettes of smartphone users evolve, it'll be interesting to see how these kinds of statistics change over time. Google Maps actually comes with Android. It lets you update through the Market, but you can't actually uninstall it but just revert it to the original version that shipped for your phone. I'm guessing that's what those downloads are .
