Foxconn Takes Action Over Suicides, File Sharing Case Headed to Supreme Court

Highlights from this morning's other big tech headlines....
  • After 12 suicide attempts, an undercover expose and a public statement from Apple, Foxconn factory officials finally vowed to take meaningful steps in addressing the tragic and surreal phenomenon. The Chinese gadget factory will reportedly implement 20-percent pay raises for its employees, who start out earning $130-per-month to make expensive playthings for Apple, Dell, HP, Sony, Nokia and Nintendo. Apparently the pay hike is typical for this Chinese financial period, though, so perhaps more than just a public admonition from that extensive list of Fortune 500 corporations is in order. • During its blitzkrieg on filesharers, the RIAA earned an infamous reputation for suing unlikely criminals for impossibly high monetary figures. College students and single mothers fell victim to the vicious record execs, but the most ridiculous target may have been teenager Whitney Harper. Harper, who downloaded 37 songs before she could legally drive, claims to have been unaware of filesharing laws, and her "innocent offender" defense could now be determined by the U.S. Supreme Court. • At least two more major forces have aligned themselves with Adobe in the escalating Apple-Flash war. Both Time Warner and NBC have reportedly spurned Apple and HTML 5 in favor of maintaining their video player status quo. [From: Gizmodo]
  • Phishers and scammers utilize current events to dupe unsuspecting computer users, but a recent trend involving "scareware" actually preys on people's fears of those prevalent scams. Federal officials have apparently dismantled one such fake anti-virus ring, though, as three men have been indicted in Chicago for their role in a $100 million operation. [From: The Huffington Post]
  • Tech firms seem to be suffering from a serious lapse in creativity, as certain terms -- particularly "Buzz" -- can now apply to a variety of separate, competing organizations. Buzz, of the Google variety, has installed a new feature allowing users to repost something of interest, but instead of dubbing it "Buzz It" or "Buzzing," Google combined Facebook and Twitter nomenclature to boringly create "Reshare." • Google definitely appears to be recession proof, as the company continues to stockpile revenue while other companies have suffered or even crumbled. The mega-corporation has reportedly maintained such a level of success that it now requires its own trading floor to manage its $26.5 million cash reserve. According to Business Week, the only U.S. tech companies to have squirreled away larger nest eggs are Microsoft and Cisco. From: Business Week]
