'.38 Special Samaritan' Arrested for Aiming at iPhone Thieves

daring heistDaring heists of Apple gadgets occur so frequently, and with such violent gusto, that rather ordinary robberies seem incredibly mundane by comparison. An assault on an Oregon AT&T store, and the plundering of its iPhones, has made headlines for one highly uncharacteristic occurrence, though. The twist in this frantic tale involves an arrest, but the captured perp wasn't even one of the ruthless bandits.

As two crooks escaped the store, laden with almost $3,000 worth of cell phones, bystander Roger Witter felt obligated to intervene. The 48-year old, strapped with a legally registered .38 special, decided to un-holster his weapon and fire two "controlled" shots at the getaway car. Both shots missed, the vehicle escaped and police decided to apprehend the would-be vigilante on charges of reckless endangerment and the unlawful use of a weapon.

Despite his unfortunate and misguided attempts at heroism, Witter still asserts -- perhaps in hopes of landing a gig on the Apple task force -- that he "would do it again." But, despite his bravado, Witter probably should have just stepped aside; like so many other arrogant and foolish burglars, these AT&T assailants will probably just incriminate themselves by doing something unbelievably stupid within the next few days.
