Real-Life Hoverboard Floats in the Air, Doesn't Do Much Else

Hoverboard
We don't really need to reminisce about how direly and viscerally we pined for the day when we would get to rock our very own Hoverboards, á la 'Back to The Future Part II,' because we know that you all wanted one, too. Now, in an expression of '80s nostalgia, tech experimentation, and nerdy fandom of the most extreme order, French artist Nils Guadagnin has created an actual Hoverboard. And now we're signing off, because the rest of the day's news could not possibly measure up to this.

But we jest. The board and its pedestal contain electromagnets to elevate the board, and a laser system to keep it in place -- yet, alas, you won't be able to use it to go air-bending under Griff's Extend-o Bat. Besides being an aesthetically faithful replica of the original prop, there's not much more to the thing. So, we have to wonder how we would classify this objet. It's not really functional, or intended to be interactive, so we can't call it design. If it's art, is it trying to say something about '80s economic exuberance or our current culture of looking back? Or is it about the irony of a gizmo that's meant to soar through the air, but is confined to the gallery space? Probably not. It's still hot, though. (And, then again, do Hoverboards need a reason?) Check out a video of the Hoverboard, lazily levitating in place, after the break. [From: Fubiz, via: NOTCOT]
