Warner Bros. Sued for Pirating Anti-Piracy Tech

According to a complaint filed by MPV, the company demoed its anti-piracy tech for the film distributor at Warner Bros.' invitation in 2003. MPV claims that Warner then began using its technology in 2004 without its permission. A suit has now been filed in New York that seeks to prevent Warner Bros. from using the anti-piracy coding on future film prints, and attempts to collect financial damages incurred from the patent violation. If it turns out that Warner did steal its anti-piracy technology, you can bet it will be one of the biggest stories of the year. After all, pirating anti-piracy tech makes for a great headline. The true definition of irony, back at you.

I almost never complain about anything. But, please, please , PLEASE stop putting that FBI warning at the start of my DVDs. I'm not going to steal anything. At least put it at the end of the movie so I don't have to be called a thief everytime I put it in the player.....PLEASE stop making threats. PLEASE.. Alfred-

no, it's irony
StefanMay 30th 2010 8:19PM
Yeah, I agree. The statement mentioned in the "dictionary" picture should be sarcasm, not irony.
finalopportunityJun 4th 2010 2:23AM
You're right, that's definitely sarcasm not irony.

You'll find back-and-forth about this topic all over the place, and it's not clear cut because language is flexible. For the 'true' definition of irony, I always go back to Bender (Futurama, The Devil's Hands are Idle Playthings): "The use of words expressing something other than their literal intention; now that.. is.. irony." Sarcasm, then, is not separate from irony -- it's a form of irony with malicious or 'snarky' intent.
Then there's the 'common' definition of irony -- whether tragic irony, epitomised in Alanis Morissette's song, or "you-deserved-that" irony, as we see here.
Different again is 'hipster irony': wearing an old band shirt and over-sized sun-glasses because you -know- it's in bad taste, but we won't go into that..

This isn't new. Sony did something similar a couple years ago.

I did not see in this article if the “software or method of” anti-piracy was patented, if it was patented was it patented in the USA or in Europe?
danielwetteroffJun 9th 2010 11:57AM
"According to new infringement lawsuits filed against Warners, Technicolor and Deluxe in New York and Germany, MPV says that in 2003, it introduced the studio to a method of marking films with a distinctive code so it could track back sources of piracy to the exact theater in which an unauthorized copy originated. MPV says it has been trying to get Warners to pay for use of the technology since it allegedly began incorporating the invention in prints throughout Europe in 2004."
thats from the article that is quoted as the source of this story, Sooo, the issue isnt about in the US or Europe since the product was released in both countries, it really doesnt matter where they had their copyright.

I love it. They are greedy pigs. They even make ebay remove Wizard of Oz craft items such as jewelry. Can you imagine. They own the Wizard of Oz. Nobody can even make a piece of jewelry with the Wicked Witch or anything from The Wizard of Oz. Along with just about everything else out there from years ago. Casper the ghost...Flintstones. Real greedy when it comes to even the little people just bringing back great memories from the past. I hope they get theirs!! They deserve it!!

When shit hits the fan, get outta Dodge.
BigPowerLifterMay 26th 2010 6:33PM
Good.
The people running Warner Brothers are a bunch of idiots who treat their fans like crap, suing anyone who uses any snippet of their product, which is stupid of them.
Suing or making a fan remove their YouTube videos for using few seconds of a clip or sound bite for a compilation tribute about a star or film genre is ridiculous.
Yet Warner Brothers does that.
Now if a fan copies a whole movie and puts it on YouTube, then I see their point. But not for a few seconds for the above type video.
