Senator Ben Nelson Claims ATM Ignorance (As He Votes on ATM Legislation)
How's this for a reality show pitch? Take a bunch of Senators, representatives and Supreme Court justices, put them in a swanky, upscale apartment for six months -- and surround them with high-tech gadgets as their only means of survival. Want to order a pizza, Senator Byrd? You'll have to whip out your iPhone. In need of some new reading material, Justice Scalia? There's this thing called Amazon. The slight chance of Mark Souder discovering how to use Craigslist might limit its audience to 'Showtime' subscribers, but there's no limit to the drama, confusion and inevitable cannibalism that would ensue. And we may have just found our leading man: Democratic Senator Ben Nelson. When he was recently asked about his opinion on proposed legislation that would cap withdrawal fees on most ATMs, the Senator pleaded ignorance -- literally. Apparently, the man never uses an ATM. Never has, probably never will. "I've never used an ATM, so I don't know what the fees are," the congressman says. "It's true, I don't know how to use one." As the Omaha World-Herald reports, though, the Senator does have some tech street cred. He claims he can "swipe to get my own gas," and is completely fluent in "holograms." By "holograms," he means "bar codes" that cashiers scan at checkout lines.
"I mean, I'm not without some skills," Nelson insisted. "I just haven't had the need to use an ATM." Let's just hope some of Nelson's skills include being able to reasonably vote on legislation about ATMs. [From: Omaha World-Herald]

Great example: another politician completely out of touch with voters who put them in offce!

People who spend their lives walking marble halls and farting through silk can't possibly understand the plight of the average American.

Get serious, people (and AOL)! Congressmen vote on many things without ever doing them. If they had to have experience at everything they vote on, there would be no agriculture bills (how many congressmen are former farmers?) passed, nor any transportation bills (how many have built highways and bridges, and driven cross-country bus and tractor-trailer?) or law-enforcement bills ( how many are former police officers and FBI agents?). I'm certainly not one to defend Democrats, but really - this is a NON-ISSUE! I can't believe that even AOL bothered to show this stupid hatchet job!

There is no need for Senators or Congressmen to know ANYTHING about the issues that concern working Americans . They just vote the way that they are paid to vote by the lobby that will profit most by their vote .

He's smarter than YOU. He does'nt have to pay ATM fees. & neither do I. Cash is soooooooooooo much easier. For all I care, raise the ATH fees even higher.

In the real world many of have our paycheck direct deposited, and have to use an ATM to get cash. Teller processing and check processing cost the Bank a lot more than electronic transactions. The use of paper checks, deposits and teller transactions in rapidly declining. Time for people ot move into the modern times. But the people in Washington do not really live in the real world like the people who voted to put them there.

I think there are two issues at play here. While I routinely use an ATM I can say that with just a little planning and certainly some luck I have NEVER paid an ATM fee. I travel places at least a little bit, many trips have been driving. I take enough cash, my credit card, and my ATM card bank is a large operation and so has facilities in the corridor I travel from south Florida to New England by way of Atlanta. But not using an ATM is not at issue with the fees being charged to those who do. Frankly the fees are absurd and it's just a means for the banks to rip off customers from other banks when they are out of reach of their own brand.

What an asinine news story. He is voting for the people he represents. There are probably a lot of senators that never murdered someone who would vote against murder. Go figure!

Why shouldn't a senator who does not use or need to use an ATM machine be allowed to vote on their fees? They are allowed to vote on abortion and they don't have and never will have an abortion yet they still have strong opinions on them. No one gives them flack about exercising their opinions.

Get rid of these dinosaurs and vote in some guys with a pulse!!!!
JasMay 23rd 2010 9:38PM
It's not very smart to pay a fee to get your own money out of a machine. Perhaps the Senator is brighter than you think. If the fees go up maybe some of you will smarten up. :}

ATMs are essential for those of us who work until 5pm and the banks are closed.
Tom HillMay 23rd 2010 9:53PM
You've got to be joking........what do you do? Stand in line in your bank to ask for some money? Then pay $2 because you talked to your teller?
JasMay 23rd 2010 10:08PM
Stand in line? are you kidding? Heard of change? You can always get an extra 20 or 50 from a store and guess what - no fee.
70plusMay 23rd 2010 10:11PM
never used an ATM, don't plan to, and hope some idiot with a gun doesn't shoot me when he cannot force me to withdraw money. I can manage most of my other affairs with out fees as well.
mmikeblMay 23rd 2010 10:28PM
Amazing how people like Tom Hill won't stand in line to speak to another human being -- but they will sit behind 4 other cars at the drive by ATM to use it.
flashcashatmMay 23rd 2010 10:30PM
Sorry to burst your bubble, but it isn't YOUR money in the ATM, it's the company that spent the money to buy the ATM and put their money in it to provide a convenience for you. On one is holding a gun to your head to use the machine. If you don't want to pay the fee, then get in your car, drive to the bank, find a place to park or wait in line and then get your money!
samdazalMay 24th 2010 12:17AM
He isn't alone. I have never used an ATM. I have no need to...For two reasons:
It costs and from what I have observed, it only gets people in trouble. And, I am smarter that the average person.
robMay 24th 2010 5:50AM
You're absolutely right. People don't realize how much banks are scamming from the people by constantly raising the ATM fees. Just as they scam the people with overdraft charges when they process the highest amount withdrawn first, then the little charges that came later, causing us to pay $35 for a pack of gum etc. It's a multi-BILLION dollar industry. Why not put that little sliver of money back into our pockets??
GmastermanMay 23rd 2010 8:34PM
Just wondering-if you've never been raped should you be able to vote on it's legality? Guess not according to some
BTW, I've never used a atm, either. That's what bank tellers are for.
