Model One Cig Says Adieu to Second-Hand Smoke (and Hello to Second-Hand Steam)

Model One Smokeless Cigarette
Listen, we get it. Smoking is bad. In fact, it's a lot like Taco Bell. It's unhealthy, it's unattractive, and, if used in closed spaces, it produces a pungent odor that will offend innocent bystanders. We've accepted it, and think that's the way it should be. If smoking (or chalupas) were even marginally better for you, it would pretty much defeat the whole purpose, wouldn't it? That being said, may we introduce Ploom's Model One -- the Fresco Menu of cigarette smoking.

While, by the creators' admission, this smokeless cigarette isn't necessarily any healthier than traditional cancersticks, it does vaporize tobacco, rather than burn it. As a headline on Techi proclaims, this butane-fueled, non-electric gadget promises "to eliminate second-hand smoke." Well, there you have it, folks. Meet second-hand steam.

Essentially, the device cooks capsules of tobacco, releasing nicotine-rich vapor. We like to think of it as baking, rather than grilling, your lungs. On the topic of healthy lungs, co-creator James Monsees told CNET, "We have to tread carefully, but always the goal was to introduce something we feel comfortable with [in regards to] health." Well, we're glad to hear you're comfortable with it, James. Some of us, meanwhile, are comfortable with the discomfort of a loaded Meximelt and a box of full flavors -- more comfortable than we are with "blue tea"-scented, non-FDA approved, steaming tobacco capsules, anyway.
