Nickelodeon Website Named 'Worst Toy of the Year'

In her justification of the organization's decision, campaign director Susan Linn argued that the network "promotes violent and sexualized games to young children," adding that the violence on the website "shows how little regard the company has for their well-being." The campaign took particular issue with a game called 'Perry the Sneak,' which it describes as a "series where gamers take the role of a peeping Tom trying to catch revealing glimpses of naked women showering" (or, as we like to call it, "the Internet"). Nickelodeon declined to comment on the award, probably because it was too busy thinking of ways to contort the malleable minds of America's youth.
The New York Times takes a refreshingly more circumspect perspective on the issue, acknowledging the difficulty in defending games that encourage kids to "shoot kittens out of cannons onto a row of metal spikes," yet pointing out that such morbid games comprise only a small portion of the entertainment available on Nickelodeon's site. And, since AddictingGames hasn't changed much over the course of the past few years (Thankfully, since we rely on the site for our Flash games feature), it's a bit puzzling that the organization's voters would choose to smack a scarlet letter on it now. But if the campaign wants to single out games that are destroying children, so be it. We'll just grab a bowl of popcorn and wait for the results of 'Worst Parent of the Year' to roll in. Because if we're going to comprehensively treat a decidedly double-edged issue, it would only make sense to smear both sides of the coin, right? [From: The New York Times]

Ah, i think Nick will get away with whatever it can!! I'm blown away with some of the shows on Nick Jr!! Anybody watch Yo Gabba Gabba? Most popular show on the network right now, and i have no doubt they are LAUGHING all the way to the bank. The main Charicater (Mis-spell) who looks like a giant Trojan with one eye (One eyed Monster?LOL) , his best friend looks just like him except he's is solid white WITHOUT the bumps and looks like a a giant Penis. Then there is Daisy (The Flower, wink wink) and the Cat?? The sexual puns are so in your face, i cannot believe there has not been a backlash by some parents.

You've got to be kidding. Sounds like the same crap that was said about Sponge Bob Square Pants. Get your mind out of the gutter. I've watched this show with my grandaughter and it teachs values not penis sizes. Get real!

Get your mind out of the gutter what your saying about that show on Nick JR is a lie you have no facts to backup your proof. Your wrong and out of touch.

What these people don't seem to understand is that Nickelodeon is a sponsor to addicting games, not a parent website. Addicting games was around long before Nick got a hold of it, and it already had these types of games. I doubt that that many people from Nick have even looked to make sure the games are ok. Thats all I have to say, and correct if im wrong, but i think that Nick should not be backlashed for sponsoring another website.
pokemarie01May 16th 2010 9:33AM
yeah, but if Nick is going to sponsor a website, then they SHOULD check out the games on it. Nick does need to get some lashes for sponsoring such a site (and, yes, tons of children play on AddictingGames.com, and it has some pretty disgusting stuff), and even more if they did even bother to check what games were on it. That's just irresponsibility at it's best.

OMG are you serious? The website is trademarked to MTV. The game Perry the Peep is marked mature. This website inst marketed to kids who are interested in Nickelodeon, its for kids who like MTV (which Nickelodeon owns). This website is not a "toy", it is not intended for kids, and mature games are clearly marked as such.
I'm suprised there was no mention of Bored.com, Newgrounds.com or Crazysh*t.com, or any of the others aimed for the 14+ demographic with mature content in a separate area for adult visitors but as House said, "Why do they bother putting age restrictions on these things when all you have to do is click, “Yes, I am 18”? Even a 17-year-old can figure that out."
You cannot depend on a website, or a company or anyone else to parent your child. If you dont want your kid to go and play a game like Perry the Peep then block the website.. its that simple. The TOADY should be awarded to actual toys for children, not a website of user-made flash games for teenagers. If you want to see some real toys that are simply wrong, go to youtube and search for JeepersMedia. Its pretty funny.

I'm pretty sure that it's the parents responsibility to monitor what their child is getting into, especially on the internet. The media is full of things that many people would consider "immoral" or inappropriate for children but it's not Nickelodean's or MTV's or any corporation's job to monitor what a child may or may not play or see, that's a job for parents. Fortunately we live in a country that allows us to have freedom in the media and allows people to market their creativity whether or not most people find it offensive. You can put filters on your computer if you don't want to have your kids see things that are probably inappropriate for their age group, or you could monitor their online and tv time. If a kid grows up to be a serial killer, it's either because they have a mental illness that they were genetically predisposed to or because they were severely abused and/or neglected-- if video games play a role it would be minor and in combination with other environmental and genetic factors. Besides, have any research studies been done showing a positive correlation between video game playing and criminal activity? Even if there were a study done, it would hold no validity or reliability meaning that it would hold no scientific evidence because there is no way to rule out outside influences that would distort the conclusion.

1st of all anyone who designs a game like Perry the Sneak has some serious effin issues to begin with. No matter what age wether 4, 14, or 44 u are seriously effed up in the head to play a game like that when there are so many other non stalker, non sexually disturbed games to play.
Joey's MomMay 16th 2010 10:08AM
What a sick effin website there were NO warnings regarding age on it and there was even a suicide game listed. Nick SHOULD be ashamed of themselves. Normal people do not want to play 'suicide' games. Sick in the effin head.

What happened to parents monitoring what their children do online? There's such a thing as "parental controls", take advantage of them and stop blaming the companies.
EmilyMay 16th 2010 12:21PM
Instead of blaming the website, why don't most of you blame yourself? You're so busy bashing the website that you forget that it could all be avoided if you simply blocked the website. Great parenting skills!!!

What about a channel for adults that hypes the glorified killing of alien peoples with strange cult beliefs, promotes hatred and fear of things they invent to frighten the viewers, considers people who try to make peace to be weak, and leads viewers to believe that their actions are led by supernatural beings who can take over your mind, or make hurricanes happen... FOX NEWS.

Uh, who cares? Kids are going to learn about everything anyway and they will probably do stupid things with that knowledge. But guess what? That's part of growing up. It doesn't matter if they learn it from nick or googling something they're curious about. The problem with you people is that you're too overprotective. This isn't a problem about "maturity", it's a problem with antediluvian ideas. Be progressive. Catch up with the internet.
It's the parent's job to try to lead a kid in the right direction. Keep in mind that you can never directly control your child - but I don't need to tell you that. I'm a kid as well, but you should KNOW you can't "control" us, but as I said, it's your job to try to lead us in the right direction. Blaming the websites, phones or whatever else the adults blame isn't going to work. You need to take an active role and be a friend, not an adult, to your kid.
PatriciaMay 16th 2010 12:43PM
If I remember right the television & remote have on & off buttons, don't they? Get with it. That doesn't mean little Joey won't watch it at someone elses house. You have choices make them.
getaprenupMay 16th 2010 12:51PM
Come on! Parents when are you going to be the PARENT in your childrens lives? You keep looking for websites, reality shows, celebs, video games ect... to raise and be role models for your children. Before I let my children use the web to play games, I check out the site. Don't have children just to "keep the man around". Have them because you want to and make sure they are successful in life. Discipline your children right. Stop letting others have influence over YOUR children. STOP blaming the failure of your parents or whoever raised you to not raising your child right.

This group is out touch just like Prudes Of America PTC. A website is not a toy and shouldn't be named worse toy of the year CFC everything they say is baseless just like the PTC how anyone can take these groups seriously is beyond me all they do is lie and slander that is a fact I just laugh at these groups there out touch. Parents need to be parents don't let your kids on the website or change channel or turn off the TV. And stop blaming TV networks & website it isn't there job to look out for the kids thats your job.
