Home Depot Offers $20 EcoSmart LED Bulbs, Undercuts GE and Phillips
When we mentioned the new, hyper-efficient bulbs from General Electric (GE) and Phillips, we suggested that, at $40 and $50 a pop, consumers wouldn't be eager to jump on board that lighting train. But according to Engadget, The Home Depot's new EcoSmart LED is cheaper and almost as powerful as the ones soon to be available from GE and Phillips. The EcoSmart LED, which is the equivalent of a regular 40-watt bulb, costs just $20, emits 429 lumens and has a wallet-friendly lifetime of about 50,000 hours. The bulbs are are backordered online, so you'll have to hit bricks and mortar Home Depots if you want to get your hands on some bulbs. GE and Phillips can't be thrilled, but it's nice to finally see competition driving down prices in the LED bulb market. Who knows; it might soon be cost-effective, rather than just hip, to use LED bulbs in our houses. [From: Engadget and Home Depot]

Ok, I love this cost friendly LED Ecosmart bulb from home depot. I even have to admit that it seems to be brighter than the 75 watt incadescent bulb I have in the utility room. My major problem is the shoebox size hard plastic packaging that the bile comes in. My guess is that this bulbs packaging is 2/3 the cost of the bulb. There is nothing ecologically smart about the packaging.
