Gory PSAs Make Their Point Well, The Most Frightening Sim City Ever

There's a load of great tech news happening out there every day, and, unfortunately, we just can't cover it all. Here are a few of the other noteworthy things we saw today on our never-ending journey through the wild, wild Web.
  • Shock PSAs have their merits. We fully support the decision to put photographs of diseased lungs on cigarette packs (except in the U.S., where Big Tobacco will pay for TheTruth.com ads but won't accept grisly postmortem shots), and even the New York City Health Department's gross video showing a man drinking pure fat from a soda can. So we can totally get behind the gore featured in some new anti-driving-while-talking ads in Bangalore, India. The slo-mo, blood-spattered faces of loved ones grace these new PSAs, encouraging people to get off the phone if the person on the other end is operating a car. [From: The Inspiration Room]
  • You've never seen 'Akira'?! Go log on to Netflix with a quickness and witness Katsuhiro Otomo's masterpiece of dystopic Tokyo, featuring gruesome mutations, sweet motorbike chases and the construction of masculinity in the megalomaniacal Tetsuo. After that, hop on down to Pittsburgh, PA and check out the hand-drawn cels from the movie on view at the Toonseum until July 18. [From: io9]
  • Vincent Ocasla is a 22-year-old architecture student who spent four years theorizing, planning, developing, building and, finally, overseeing the daily operations of Magnasanti -- a 6-million-resident-strong 'Sim City 3000' megalopolis. Vice Magazine had a chance to interview this young man whose Machiavellian urban planning (residents didn't live past 50, as a consequence of the city's growth) is belied by his Buddhist roots. Check out a video of Magnasanti and the interview with Ocasla at the link. [From: Vice]
