Android Tops iPhone in Market Share Race, NPD Reports

That growth puts Android in second place, only behind smartphone champ RIM and its business-minded BlackBerry handsets. Meanwhile, the iPhone drops to number three with a mere 21-percent of the market. Of course Android, like BlackBerry, is available on several different carriers and on many different handsets. Similarly, the OSes have likely been aided by deals like the buy-one-get-one offer that Verizon offers for all Android and BlackBerry devices.
While it's possible that iPhone sales are slowing in preparation for the launch of a new version this summer, it's more likely that AT&T's exclusivity is starting to catch up with the Apple device. Despite recent improvements in service, AT&T still suffers from low customer satisfaction, only exacerbating Apple's slipping numbers. With 36-percent of sales going to RIM, it's got a comfortable hold on first place. But if Apple wants to compete for at least number two, it's going to have to expand beyond AT&T. The iPhone has a huge lead over Android. Android doesn't have 28% of the whole market, not even close. These numbers are for this last quarter only.
The drop in Apple's share FOR THE QUARTER is probably related to the fact a new iPhone model is going to be announced in less than a month.

Apple is at it's best being 2nd (or in this case 3rd). They are used to chasing the top dog--historically they have done pretty good in that position.
