So, your mom probably doesn't love Flash games. The excessive violence, the robots chasing kittens; the whole genre is probably a bit too much for her. But here are a couple of sweet links to pass along to her (even moms get bored during their office day) to celebrate how wonderful your matriarch is this Mother's Day. If she is a total technophobe, play them in her honor... or at least appreciate how creepy games marketed to females can be. Yeesh.
Rose & Camellia
Not to be a horrible 'Everybody Loves Raymond' cliché, but the idea of getting into a slap-off with your mother-in-law might have crossed your mother's (or heck, even your wife's) mind before.
So help poor Reiko defend her "lowborn" (yes, we are serious) honor by slapping her way through her recently deceased husband's family. If women swatting at each other is your thing, make sure to enjoy the Victorian era music and the gradual injuries the women take on. Note: this isn't a girly game. Fast mouse-manship is a must, and we've had trouble making it past the first level. Aim for the face, ladies.
Turbo Granny
She might not be a mother, but give Grandma some love on the 9th as well. This Adult Swim racing game imagines the player as a pedal-pushing septuagenarian on her way to bridge club. Squishing cars, driving the wrong way down the road, and collecting pearls and walking canes on her way. The
pixel-y, 8-bit arcade style is a nice throw back, as is the funny text that appears when you are driving, like "What a hoot!" We love our grams as much as the next gamer, but outracing cops and pushing traffic off of the road has never been more fun than it is with Grandma.
The Great Kitchen Escape
Not to play into gender stereotypes, but the average parent, be it mother or father, needs to get out of the kitchen now and again. So this
Armor Games puzzler asks you to look around your kitchen to find a means of escaping. Clicking and gathering clues is easy, but the best tip we have is click on the 'eye' icon on the upper left hand corner to see what it is you need to be building. Good luck, and for Mother's Day, keep Mom out of the kitchen.
Defend Your Mom
To be honest, the only reason this is included in our
games roundup is because everyone wants to defend their mother. Gameplay is simple, the music sounds like a 4 a.m. afterhours and the game itself goes against my mother's request: "Leila, please do something a little less violent for your games' piece next time." Also, we would like to think that if we were defending our mom against hoodlums and maniacs, she'd have better sense then to run to the periphery, just out of gun's reach. However, protecting our Mommy is one of the most primal, and potent, impetus there is.
Drift
While there is nothing particularly maternal about this game, the lovely graphics, beautiful sound and peaceful atmosphere may be the exact time-waster she needs.
Playing as a kitten racing through a beautiful meadow, simply jumping from balloon to balloon on an idyllic, breezy day could help her see the wonderful, stress-relieving properties of gaming. Since there is no real winning (as far as we can tell), there is no real losing, either.
