Google Facelift Adds Updated Logo, New Search Results Layout

At first glance, the new layout definitely appears similar to Facebook's left-side vertical toolbar. Google's new left-side menu includes familiar choices like Maps, Videos and Shopping, but the most appealing alteration -- a dropbox -- appears immediately below this section. The drop-down menu adds visibility to the Google Wonder Wheel and to various search filters. These now easy-to-find filters allow users to sort results depending on relevance and date, with the option to narrow the focus by time or style (news or blog).
Many traditional googlers will obviously greet the changes with vitriol and despair, but to us, this seems like a logical and positive step in Google's steady evolution. The only entities who should worry about Google's continued progress should probably be the folks at Twitter and Facebook (or maybe just the rest of the Web, in general). If I wanted an obnoxious sidebar on the left I'd use Bing. Personally I'm looking for a new search engine.

Why are my comments deleted? Is this not open discussion?

@ Chris:
Apologies -- the links in your first comment weren't working for some reason, so I marked for deletion. They seem to be working fine now.

I keep Google as my homepage because I use it so much, so I see value in the menu to the left, but Google should know better than to force it on their loyal searchers who heavily utilized Google because of their page's simplicity.
The answer is clear: if there are options for expanding and contracting lists within the menu, add an option at the top to contract the menu when it's not in use. At least give me an option in the Search Settings to get rid of this menu.
This is a big step down for the Google layout in my opinion.
