Google Maps Brings Earth to the Party, Make Photos With Your Laptop Screen

There's a load of great tech news happening out there every day, and, unfortunately, we just can't cover it all. Here are a few of the other noteworthy things we saw today on our never-ending journey through the wild, wild Web.
  • Whoa! Have you checked out Google Maps lately? The search engine giant recently began to incorporate Google Earth into Maps, resulting in an entirely 3-D environment rendered with images from Street View and satellites. It's a bit rough around the edges, but how creepy/awesome is this? We were able to zoom right into downtown Manhattan and find our office building, pictured above. But don't stalk us, please. • We're really digging Aditya Mandayam's Laptograms, an invented photographic process for DIY image-makers. You take a piece of photosensitive paper and hold it against your laptop screen, which acts as the negative. And, presto photo! Follow the link for a snippet of code that will turn your screen into a virtual shutter, or just check out the small but awesome gallery of polarized images. [From: Laptogram, via: Kottke.org]
  • We've been following the evolution of 3-D printing closely, from the MakerBot to Unfold's extruded ceramics. Now 3-D printing company Shapeways has begun shipping their first glass productions, and they look marvelous. To get your very own heretofore impossible design made out of glass, all you have to do is upload a rendering to place and order. Let us know if you have Shapeways extrude something for you.
