Virtuoso Lang Lang Plays iPad Concert Encore

lang lang ipad concertToward the end of his performance at the Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco this week, piano master Lang Lang came out for an encore. Instead of sitting down and cracking his knuckles in front of a Steinway, though, he whipped out his iPad, and proceeded to drop jaws. Using Smule's Magic Piano app, Lang Lang performed Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's 'Flight of the Bumblebee,' which is included as one of the songs in the Magic Piano songbook.

The app, according to the Wall Street Journal, allows users to crank out the jams by running their fingers along beams of light that stream from the top of the iPad screen. Smule co-founder Ge Wang actually sent Lang Lang a prototype of the app earlier this month for him to try, but never heard back from him. After this week's performance, Wang is convinced that the pianist approves. "I've never seen the freestyle Magic Piano played like he did," Wang says, adding that he's pretty sure that Lang Lang "totally digs Magic Piano and the iPad." We're pretty sure that mere mortals won't be able to make it look as effortless as Lang Lang does in the video after the jump, but at least virtuosos can now blow our minds without having to lose theirs.
