Philly Zoo Recreates Endangered Animals in LEGO

When endangered species die In St. Louis, the zoos turn to animatronics. Creepy, unconvincing animatronics. Hipper areas like Philly (which we loath to throw any praise at, being from NYC) take the opportunity to show off legitimate works of art in an effort to draw attention to the species that might be following the Dodo towards extinction.

'Creatures of Habitat: A Gazillion-Piece Animal Adventure' is a new exhibit that opened this week at the Philadelphia Zoo. The installation is home to 34 endangered animals created entirely out of LEGO blocks by renowned LEGO artist Sean Kenney. Polar bears, penguins and even monkeys can be found, painstakingly recreated out of what was once thought of as just a children's toy.

The exhibit took over a year and 95,000 LEGO blocks to complete. The plastic animals are accompanied by descriptions of how their habitats are under threat and what we can do to help preserve them. 'Creatures of Habitat' will run through the end of October and should help children understand that what they and their parents do has a direct impact on world and the animals around them.
