'Significant' Twitter Redesign Coming Soon?

'Significant' Twitter Redesign Coming Soon?
Twitter has kicked its maturation process into high gear over the last year. In the last 12 months or so, we've seen the debut of lists, geo-tagging, the @anywhere ad platform and even a redesign of the homepage. The look of the actual Twitter interface, though, has remained largely unchanged. That might not be the case much longer as Doug Bowman, the lead designer for Twitter, has offered the public a tantalizing, but very limited glimpse of an upcoming "significant" facelift.

Bowman posted the image on Dribbble, a site for showcasing design work, and teased that the tiny sliver of the new, rounded, matte-textured interface was all he could share without "giving away the farm." All we know is that stats will be moving to the fore; profiles will list how long a user has been on Twitter, how many times a day (on average) he or she tweets, and what percentage of those are replies to other users.

We can only assume that this redesign is part of a major feature upgrade foreshadowed by a Twitter developer a couple months ago. Back in February, engineer Alex Payne posted a message to his Twitter account that read:
"If you had some of the nifty site features that we Twitter employees have, you might not want to use a desktop client. (You will soon.)"
The message has since been deleted, but it's clear that Twitter wants to take on the creators of third-party tools like TweetDeck. Of course, Twitter has been slowly moving in that direction anyway; the introduction of geo-tagging and lists rendered many of such clients' selling points moot. Rest assured that the moment the new Twitter goes live, we'll bring you everything you need to know about it. [From: Mashable and Sillicon Alley Insider]
