Little Explorer Workstation: An Outrageously Expensive Toy for Tots

The Little Explorer comes with a 160-gigabyte hard drive, which is entirely too large for anything your tyke will ever need. The kid-friendly mouse and keyboard, and 19-inch flat-screen LCD come standard, as do the pre-loaded games and learning software. Is it totally unreasonable to buy a preschool-oriented computer workstation for your tot? Absolutely not, considering that they're going to grow up with computers being an integral part of their lives. Is it a little eccentric, in 2010, to latch on to the Little Explorer bandwagon? Probably so, considering the exorbitant price for a workstation whose components are already outdated (if you want, try the XO Laptop, stylishly designed by Yves Behar). But this is surely only the first of many workstations the toy market will spew forth in the near future. [From: DVICE]

People are stupid enough to have children they will be foolish enough to waist money on this toy..
NicoleApr 11th 2010 7:50AM
I have 3 children and wouldn't buy this toy. No child need something like this.
TracyApr 11th 2010 2:22PM
Tony,, so I guess your parents were stupid?? They had you.
cindiApr 11th 2010 10:16AM
I'm guessing you have no kid's, too bad you'r missing out on a great adventure, however ,i would NEVER spend twenty six hundred $ on something they are going to out grow in a yr or less..
heatherApr 11th 2010 1:37PM
tony, i take it you have no children but not every parent is going to go out and buy this over the top toy for their children. i have a son and i would NEVER buy something like this for him. he is 3 and knows how to run the computer and everything just by using mine. think before you type!

It's waste, not waist. Maybe your parents should have bought you one.

It's waste, not waist. Maybe your parents should have bought one for you. Just sayin'.
vanessaApr 12th 2010 8:17PM
It's "waste," not "waist." Glad you're too "smart" to have children...
HungnaApr 11th 2010 9:10AM
Wow that's expensive but worth it! The kids will love it! Totally worth your money!
imbettathansxyApr 11th 2010 11:49AM
It would be cheaper to buy your kids a computer, computer table, and programs for kids to learn from. At least this way your child will not out grow it too soon. You could also buy your child a video game console for less that probably does just as much as this and then some for less. The price is waaaaaay too much for a child's toy. It would probably be more beneficial for everyone if the parents would just sit down and parent and put that 2,000+ dollars in a savings fund for the child so that when they get of an age that money is necessary like for college or a new car they would have much more to show for than a fisher price thing they out grew so very long ago.
If a parent were to buy this for their child it would be for selfish purposes and not necessarily for the child's best interest. Either as a way to distract a child so that the parent can do something they would prefer to do or as a way to show off to their friends and family members to show how much they "love" their child.
Purchasing pricy products does not make one a good parent. A good parent is an involved parent.

You have got to be kidding me, you wonder why today's kids are as spoiled as they are, and leave it to the rich nitwits to buy this for thier kids, who have all kinds of smarts on how to make money but no commen sense.

That's a lot of money to spend on something your child will grow out of in a few years! My brother is 3 years old and we just buy him fun little computer games on the internet and he knows how to play them and everything. Why not just have your child sit on your lap while you're on the computer and let them play some child-friendly games?
JennaApr 11th 2010 10:20AM
I'd just like to say that I used to love the game shown on the screen. We played it all the time at school. Something with Millie in it.
AndreaApr 11th 2010 10:28AM
Wouldnt be much more senseable to put that money in a college savings fund than into a toy that one will be out dated in a short time and two the child will out grow in a very short time not to mention grow bored of in an even shorter time!
RoxannaApr 11th 2010 10:33AM
Go outside and play.

I think the correct phrase would be, "it is bright and Little Tikes-y in the way young-ins love." Unless Fisher Price bought Little Tikes in the past hour or so.
Nice product, if it stands up to abuse. Kids need all the advantages they can get.

Great -- teach them early to be self-absorbed with their gadgets, just like the adult idiots walking around with their toys. Walking into traffic, bumping into people, talking on their cell phones loud in the grocery store. I'd like to trip every one of them. And, oh yeah, let's not forget the ones who drive and weave all over the road while talking away and texting away -- those folks are a lot of fun too.

Let's see...I could spend $2600 on that because I want to be a good parent and get my kids started off with computer technology as soon out of the womb as possible...or I could go to walmart, spend $400 on a real computer, $150 on a decent desk and then go home and download a ton of free educational kid games. Then I set the parental settings so Bob the molester can't net surf my kids and let them go at it. I spent $550 on something that is so generic that it will easily upgrade as they get older and I have $2100 to blow on shit like the crack I must be smoking because I felt it right to by my preschooler a computer in the first place. Screw imagination and exercise, my 5 year old is king of the keyboard! Up yours, Bill Gates! lol
jackieApr 11th 2010 11:54AM
what a joke ! children will grow tired of it in 2 months and quit using it like they do with everything else.

Aren't kids allowed to be kids anymore?
We didn't have daycare - we didn't even learn to color inside the lines until we were in kindergarten!
