Twitter Redesigns Homepage, Adds Trending Ticker

Twitter just unveiled a drastically redesigned homepage and search section with little introduction (no word from either the official blog or Twitter accounts). At the moment, the redesign appears to be popping up at random for users; only some of the Switched team has been able to get it to appear.
The new, three-column design injects a lot of movement into the mix with its horizontally scrolling, '90s Web design-style ticker that displays the latest trending topics. Below, a vertically scrolling 'top tweets' section draws from the robotic (algorithm-based) @toptweets account (which follows everybody). The redesign also features a new 'See who's here' module, which lists a mixture of businesses, magazines, and celebrities.
Though it doesn't appear that the new design extends to user pages, it has changed the look and feel of Twitter's real-time search pages. The search pages also feature the trending ticker as well as a real-time tally of how many tweets are relevant to your search. The old design seems to return site-wide once we log in, so stay tuned to see when the new look gets pushed out to everyone. [From: Twitter]
[Update: Twitter's official blog just posted a brief introduction to the new design.]
