Is Apple Prepping a Verizon and 4G iPhone for the Summer?

Inside sources told our friends at Engadget that the fourth-gen iPhone, destined for AT&T, would be called the iPhone HD, and would debut on June 22nd of this year (which is in line with past announcements). According to Mac blogger John Gruber, who has a good track record with these sorts of things, the new iPhone will double the screen's resolution (a necessity to compete with the HD2 and EVO 4Gs of the world), add a front-facing camera for video calls, allow multi-tasking, and use a new processor like the one found in the iPad.
Details on the CDMA version are much more scarce. The Wall Street Journal says the handset, destined for either Verizon or Sprint, will enter mass production in September, likely too late to reach broad availability for the Holiday season. Other than that, it's not known whether the CDMA version would be based on the iPhone 3G S or on the tentatively titled HD.
Of course, if and when these products are announced (and we're sure they will be), we'll be here to give you the low down. In the meantime, we'll just serve our purpose of being another cog in the rumor mill. [From: Wall Street Journal and Daring Fireball, via: Engadget]
