'Poker Surface' Puts Online Gambling on the Multi-Touch Table

Students at the University of Duisburg-Essen in Germany are helping to redefine virtual poker with 'Poker Surface,' a system that gives card sharks a way to play -- without the cards, the chips, or the table (or, unfortunately, those Aces up your sleeve).
'Poker Surface' uses a multi-touch screen as well as a player's mobile phone to simulate the game. Using the intuitive system, bettors can drag chips across the surface just as they would slide them across the table, and can flip cards with a mere tap. Players can even tap the table twice to call a bet, a nice nod to the subtleties of a gesture inherent in the game. Cell phones are used ingeniously, as well. A player's hand shows up on his or her phone screen when it's tilted towards him, but the cards are flipped over when the cell phone is tilted away, ensuring that nobody can sneak a peak at an opponent's hand.
The students, who are part of the university's Pervasive Computing and User Interface Engineering Group, intended to develop an interactive system drawing on both the privacy of mobile phones and the communality afforded by tabletop surfaces. For what it's worth, we think they succeeded brilliantly. Until they can simulate beer, cigars and snacks, however, we'll stick with the real thing. [From: Engadget]
