U.S. Drops Shamefully to Fifth in Most 'Networked' Countries List
Last week, we told you about the FCC's ambitious new broadband plan. Now, a recent report indicates that increasing high-speed Internet access in the U.S. might be more crucial than previously thought. According to the Wall Street Journal, the U.S. dropped from third to fifth in the World Economic Forum's latest rankings of national information technology systems. Sweden topped the rankings, and, to nobody's surprise, China and India made huge gains. According to the report, the U.S. comes in 22nd with regards to the percentage of people who have broadband subscriptions. For its overall score, the WEF considers more than 50 factors, like venture capital availability, technology laws, and math and science education. While the U.S. dropped overall, the report states that it remains one of the most innovative out of the 133 nations surveyed -- notably by producing more patents than many other countries.
So, will the FCC's National Broadband Plan boost the U.S.'s rankings in future WEF rankings? It should, but rather than worry about rankings, we'd just like to see the plan's outlined points addressed as soon as possible. [From: Wall Street Journal and World Economic Forum]

I think we need to take stock in America (USA) and take a hard look at what we are facing. Certain people (rich) were allowed to do things that negatively affected the assets of millions of innocent hardworking people (middle class/poor) and the rich are still rich. The middle class is shrinking, creating a massive class of poor.
I know people (including myself) who've worked hard, scrimped and saved for decades only to see what we sacrificed to save obliterated thanks to some shady dealings allowed by our elected representatives (none of them middle class nor poor, mind you) who do NOT represent the people that elected them, rather they represent the big buckets of money thrown at them by corporations and their lobbyists.
WHY SHOULDN'T WE, THE BEST NATION IN THE WORLD, HAVE HUMANE HEALTH CARE FOR ALL, REPEAT A L L OF ITS CITIZENS??!!!
And you know what? Shame on all the racists and haters, SHAME!!!! GET ON YOUR KNEES AND PRAY FOR FORGIVENESS (oh, you probably don't believe in God, either, if you can't have compassion for your fellow man/woman/child).

This is understandable because the U.S. has, for about 50 years, begun to abandon their faith and adherence to capitalism in favor of socialism. This trend suppresses the need to achieve and rewards those that exist by forcing those that excel to share their rewards from their efforts.Capitalism and individualism wanes and dies in the forced equality of socialism.
Sweden is number one on this list and Sweden has cradle to grave social services including national health care. You opinion has no support. Also consider that all the other countries on this list are democratic and capitalist countries with social welfare programs. In other words, you might say that because of their social programs, smaller nations like Netherlands, Singapore and Denmark are doing quite well. Oh, and teacher salaries, as well as teacher training, in those countries are comparatively high.
You may be one sad senior citizen, but you are also a severly misinformed one.
One sad senior citizen.

pd39 the top 2% controlling the other 95% is just how it has been since the 80's. It is more like the top 5% of Americans control 98% of the wealth. And Socialism by any other name is still Socialism. America has been at the mercy of corporate Socialism since back in the 80's when Reagan took us from the leading lending country to the biggest borrowing country on earth. We look to corporations for money, health care and most every thing else we have, this is Socialism at it's worst and stops all true Capitalism . The last time I got a check from a rich man he made more off of my labor than I did. If you like sucking that corporate cock and being a corporate bitch for some old ugly fat white punk, more power to you. And I have never saw a bitch that ever had the balls to be free.

The interstate hwy system was developed to move our military if we were ever invaded. If we were fighting a war on U.S. soil the interstates would be off limits to civilian traffic. People on SSI are hopefully getting back the money they paid into it in taxes execpt disabled. FDIC is insurance for bank deposits so people will trust banks after the great depression. Our nation needs people to work, thats the only way our country will prospere. Tax breaks for the big corporations are designed so they will have monies for expansion, to hire more people. the problem is greed. Investors want return now. They are not satisfied with 10 percent return on investments they want 20 or 30 percent. So the CEO to keep their jobs cut costs to the bone to satisfy. Most corps largest expense is labor, cut jobs equalls fast profits. Lost Jobs means less tax going to pay for the cost of government. We can argue all day about the different programs funded by the government but the bottem line is not enough money to pay for it. We must figure a way to stop out sourcing the jobs, and put people back to work. Thats what the Congress needs to focus on, most of the other problems would go away or be more managible. Wal Mart has done more to ruin this nation than any one gov administation. They have put alot of american companies out of business or put them in financial difficulties trying to compete with comapnies overeas. We dont want to buy a pack of tee shirt made in the U.S. for 8$ we want the one from china for 4$, etc. We dont want to pay 2$ for a can of tomatoes we want the can for 79 cents pick by illegal imagrants. Look what happened last year with the gas at 4.00 a gallon. I say thats what started all this mess we are in. It started a domino effect. Instead of boycotting the gas pumps we paid it. We cut back on other spending. spending that suported the few jobs we had. meanwhile the oil co. made record profits. Congress did nothing but ask a few questions. Oh yea Bush was an oil man. All I'm saying is we need to wake up, stop name calling and finger pointing. I'm neither a Dem or Rep. I look at the issues and vote for who I think will be best for our country. We are all in this together.

Okay...so we have Sweden in first place, followed by Singapore, Denmark, Switzerland and the USA. Let's just take a good look at how small each of those countries are, and how homogenous their cultures and population. Now, compare them to the USA...I think we're doing remarkably well considering the vast size of this country and our diversity.

anthony most of what you said I agree with. Every Republican says tax brakes for the rich will make more jobs but history says other wise. In 2009 even though millions of people lost their jobs productivity still went up.Why, because slave driving companies that already have unreasonable demands put even more unreasonable demands on their slaves. Yes the American people have been enslaved by corporations. This is the worst kind of Socialism there is. And what we have been living under since Reagan started busting up the unions, and that was the first step to corporate socialism or corporate slavery. Clinton slowed it down but didn't even try to stop it he did give workers FMLA. But not much else in labor laws. Before Reagan took office the average CEO made about 140 dollars an hour more than his top employee, when Bush left office the average CEO made about 11 thousand dollars an hour more than his top employee. More people lived in poverty during the Reagan administration. The average number of people living under the poverty line during the eight years of the Reagan administration was 33.1 million, 25 percent more than the 26.2 million living in poverty during the previous administration. Many American workers confronted falling wages during the Reagan administration. The real (inflation adjusted) median money income of American men working year round and full time fell by nearly 1 percent during his eight years in office. More married mothers were forced to accept employment to offset the declining earning power of men. Sucking the corporate cock has become a way of life here in America and the people have sold their souls to the corporate devil and fight among themselves for the scarps that their corporate masters have tossed their way. That is what is killing America, not government, but the lack of government support for the people. If the government don't stop corporate socialism, we cannot have capitalism. It's up to you.

Blaming our failure on socialism? Hey, Sweden is a socialist country, and they're number one !
WillMar 31st 2010 5:14PM
Ok look people.
We are missing the point. Obama's healthcare plan has little to do with how many people in Sweden have internet access. Do you really think John McCain is the answer to the world's problem? Let's see what Obama has done while in office.
Began deployment of Iraq
Lead the country out of recession
Passed regulatory reform on banks
Started initiatives to restore our environment and seek alternative energy
Universal health care
Hell, he even passed a bill this week that stops the government from profiting off of student loans!
The things he has done so far are UNPREDECENTED
No other President in memory has done so much to change the face of our country permanently IN ONE YEAR. Would McCain have done that? Hilary? John Edwards? The Brown guy in Massachusetts?
THINK PEOPLE. USE COMMON SENSE. THINK OF YOUR FAMILY AND THE WORLD NOT JUST YOURSELVES.
OBAMA IS TRYING TO MAKE THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE FOR YOUR CHILDREN AND YOU CHASTISE HIM. WHY?

Sweden is a good mix of socialims and capitalism. In the 1940 the Social democrats deciede that all citizens needed health care, public education and money for retirement. Very humane and christian. It is not a very active Christiana country, but people are treated in a christiana way by its government. In the US people are not treated fairly by its government. No universal health care, poor conditions for poor people, bad day care for working parents. WHo suffers mostly from this? Poor people. If we help these persons, everybody will gain. Why does not Americans see this connection?
