Microsoft does have a powertoy for adding virtual desktops to XP, that doesn't change the fact that it isn't built into the operating system by default. Having said that, this article fails to explain that you need a video card which supports two separate monitors to do this. Yes, you do need a video card that supports dual monitors, but most modern video cards, even integrated ones, do.
