Fox Bitbop App to Provide Mobile Video, but Who Will Pay?
Almost a year ago to the day, CBS introduced its Sulu app for the iPhone, and one major competitor is finally following that pioneering move toward mobile programming. Fox Mobile Group, which is a division of Fox Entertainment (itself a division of Rupert Murdoch's News Corp.), has created Bitbop, a smartphone subscription service. The Bitbop app, which will officially launch within the next few weeks, will provide streaming and downloadable content from a variety of networks, including Fox, NBC Universal and Discovery. The programming will reportedly feature TV shows and movies, but, unlike Hulu, will require a monthly service fee -- plus possible additional charges for certain material. The service is already inspiring doubts and criticism, and it's not just isolated to the $10 monthly subscription. Until proven otherwise, most folks will probably remain highly suspicious of the streaming quality, particularly considering the bandwidth and network capabilities of certain carriers.
News Corp. Deputy Chairman Chase Carey actually foreshadowed this event last fall when he proclaimed that Hulu's "free model is a very difficult way to capture the value of [News Corp.'s] content." Apparently, the best way to "capture" that worth is to assign it a monetary value. [From: Bitbop, Gigaom and Tech Crunch]
