Use Foursquare to Follow 'Jersey Shore's' Pauly... If You Really Want To
In the corporate pond of celebrity product endorsements, there are guppies, and there are belugas. After having already reeled in Ashton Kutcher, location based social networking site Foursquare may have just harpooned the Moby Dick of contemporary celebrities: DJ Pauly D, of 'Jersey Shore' fame. The Pauly partnership will test a new Foursquare feature known as 'Celebrity Mode,' which lets celebrities share 'check-ins' with their fans or with their actual friends. That means that 'Jersey Shore' junkies will soon be able to pinpoint all the gyms, tanning beds and laundromats that Pauly D frequents, should he choose to share them with the world. Any tips that Pauly shares about his favorite nightclubs, pizza joints, or STD clinics will also be publicly visible to the Foursquare community. The feature will soon extend to other cast members from MTV reality shows like 'The Hills,' 'The City,' and 'The Real World: New Orleans.'
As CNET points out, there's a good reason to believe that this intensified celebrity engagement may help popularize Foursquare in the way that Kutcher and Oprah helped Twitter reach wider audiences. It makes sense to us that Foursquare would target reality TV stars, in particular. Most people may be interested in where A-list celebrities go for Sunday brunch, but chances are they won't be able to afford it. By definition, though, reality TV icons are supposed to be more 'regular' than traditional onscreen celebrities, which is a big part of their appeal. By including these middle ground celebrities as part of its campaign, then, Foursquare may be able to take advantage of the unique cultural space between celebrity fetishism and normalcy that most reality stars inhabit, without losing sight of its social networking roots. Why anyone would actually want to follow Pauly's footsteps, however, is another matter altogether. [From: CNET]
