Computer Glitch to Blame for Years of Raids on Elderly Couple's Home
Since 2002, the NYPD has conducted over 50 raids on the same house in Brooklyn. Each time, it has made the same mistake, all thanks to one computer glitch.According to the New York Post, the whole snafu began in 2002, when police entered the Brooklyn address of Walter Martin, 83, and his wife Rose, 82, into an alert database. They originally used the address to run a test on the system, but, for some reason, it was never removed, and has since been buried so deeply that police haven't been able to dig it up. After complaining to New York police authorities and even writing a letter to Mayor Bloomberg back in 2007, the Martins were told that the problem had been fixed. Early Tuesday morning, though, Walter and Rose once again woke up to the sound of police banging at their door, and suddenly found themselves in the middle of a raid so aggressive that officers even broke a window in the process.
Upon realizing their mistake, the police quickly apologized, and have assured the Martins that they've now flagged their address, in the event it mysteriously pops up again. While the NYPD says it has discovered how the address got into the system, it's still not sure why it occasionally comes up when they search for certain suspects.
You'd think that police would've noticed a suspicious pattern after the first 49 false alarms. Obviously, it's unfortunate for an elderly couple to have their golden years repeatedly interrupted by groundless NYPD raids, but it also exposes a potentially major flaw in the police department's approach to data management. Falling prey to a red herring computer glitch not only disturbs the lives of individuals, like the Martins, but also diverts manpower and resources away from real crimes, making an already difficult job that much harder. THE COUPLE SHOULD HAVE BOUGHT 2 DOUBLE BARRELED SHOTGUNS AND LOADED THEM WITH ROCKSALT AND SHOT SOME COPS IN THE ASS WITH THEM. BET YOU THEY WOULDN'T GET RAIDED AGAIN. OR JUST PUT A SIGN WITH BIG LETTERS IN FRONT OF HOUSE SAYING; THIS HOUSE CONTAINS NO DOUGHNUTS! GET BACK TO WORK!.

I can only wonder what is wrong with this couple. If the police broke into my house repeatedly, I'd certainly have done something about it 47 times ago. Are they mentally challenged or something?
Seriously, I'd be living the high life some place with all the money I earned from my huge lawsuit against the city and state.

Whats "wrong" with these people is that they come from a different era. In their day, NOBODY sued the police (except criminals), you just accepted that they'd made an honest mistake and you were a good citizen and didn't question authority.

Cops could stick notes in thieir vehicles not to attack that house. The couple could stick a sign on their door reminding cops that they got the wrong house. This story will force the cops to change their behavior now that the entire US population knows what idiots they are.

I'll bet you $100 the address is stored on an IBM mainframe. Bill Gates has nothing to do with it.

This attitude and mind set needs to stop in this country you are letting the Lawyers ruin this country who do you think is going to pay for this, if you don't know I'll tell you, "the Tax Payer's".

Its comforting to know that the police do so much checking on whose house they are breaking in to. Really NYPD? You just break in to whatever house the computer tells you to. No reason is needed? What a bunch of douchebags. I hope the elderly couple sues the NYPD for harrassment. It does not matter why they are doing it only the fact that they have. This gives cops a bad name and deservidely so.

I have to agree with the others about a law suit. That seems to be the only way to get a police or any other government agency to do the right thing. If they fixed the problem right away then it would be admitting to a mistake. Instead of using "random" addresses why don't they pick an address of one of the officer's, or better yet the Chief of Police. I can bet that they would have the problem fixed after the very first raid. Because you don't think that they would want this to happen to their families. Especially their 85 year old parents.
MaggieMar 23rd 2010 12:06PM
Dunk, you might want to actually read the story before you make comments that don't make sense. This couple, (God Bless them) didn't do a damn thing. What a moron you are.
Bryan MerrittMar 23rd 2010 12:17PM
You would think that some of the officers after a few times would say hey ain't we been here before and wasen't it a false alarm?? Stupid cops stupider system . I would get a lawyer ad sue the living crap out of them .
mark youngMar 23rd 2010 12:51PM
Wonder what the cops would have done if the old guy popped a cap in a cop after about the tenth time.
wyldsyde53Mar 23rd 2010 1:12PM
These types of raids happen all over the country everyday to people who have nothing to do with criminal activity. 50 times is a bit insane, but it can happen to anyone at anytime.
weenusMar 23rd 2010 1:46PM
Can the old couple say "ching ching"!
D ZulsMar 23rd 2010 2:10PM
Where's Gloria Allred in all this? Oh yeah, she only gets out front for clients that have TV coverage, no case, no suit, no trial.
CharlesMar 23rd 2010 2:22PM
This happened to a elderly friend here in Houston. Just after dark, while she was sitting in the living room watching TV her front door came crashing in, and her home was flooded with masked narcs with machine guns. The explanation: "Sorry, wrong house number!" Appology: Not much of one, and no repairs paid to replace her front door by Houston PD. She is lucky she did not have a heart attack. And of course no one knocking or shouting "Police", just knock down the front door.
Joe Papierz JrMar 23rd 2010 2:24PM
After so many repeated false raids you'd think the Police would know the address by know and just knock like a normal visitor. Maybe bring a bag of donuts for the old folks inconvenience of coming to the door............again, for nothing but a stupd police error.
