Facebook Co-Founder Launches Jumo, a Social Tool for Non-Profits

Many non-profits lack the funds to hire outside consultants to manage their new media presence and instead rely on fairly rudimentary tools like the 'Causes' app on Facebook. Jumo, which means "together in concert" in the West African language Yoruba, aims to offer a deeper interaction beyond placing a badge on a page or donating $10 with a debit card. Details are still fairly limited, but it's safe to expect Jumo will have a strong focus on information dispersal and organizing volunteers, similar to MyBO.
For now, Jumo has a simple information gathering site in place that asks you to fill out a (rather odd) survey and register your e-mail to receive updates in the future. Hughes told the Wall Street Journal he expects the service to have a proper launch in either September or October. Judging from his past successes, we expect Jumo be a hit. I believe we can all understand and appreciate the desire of Mr. Hughes to make life easier for Nonprofits everywhere, but I wonder if this approach is not counter intuitive. We are a Facebook world, nearly every business, industry, individual, college, and yes…nonprofit who wants to succeed in today’s marketplace is on Facebook. So then, why attempt to divert traffic away from a proven media forum? Remember the saying “If it isn’t broken, don’t fix it.” We are already on Facebook, you have our attention, how is this mutually beneficial for the NPO’s or their donors?
