The Best Earbuds That Won't Break the Bank

Dear Reader: We hear you loud and clear. The inability to test out earphones before buying is a tricky affair, like the consumer electronics version of a pot luck dinner; you might stumble upon something really tasty or get screwed with the equivalent of the dreaded green bean casserole with cream of mushroom soup and fried onions.
To clarify a bit, the term "earbuds" refers to earphones that sit in the rim of the ear, while "canalphones," or "in-ear monitors," are the variety inserted into the ear canal. The difference between the two is immense. Buds are preferred by many for comfort and also for the ability to hear outside sound in addition to music. However, earbuds can't approach the sonic experience offered by similarly priced canalphones, and often require a higher volume in order to compete with ambient noise. As a result, they can potentially endanger your long-term hearing. Canalphones, on the other hand, can offer incredible sound quality at a much lower volume and typically shut out a majority of ambient sound (although that can be a problem if you're, say, biking in traffic or walking along a busy street). Canalphones aren't for everyone, seeing as they get shoved deep into the ear canal, making for a more "intimate" experience with the intricacies of using an ear wax pick. But we digress...
If you simply can't handle using canalphones, then we'd highly recommend a pair of $99 AKG K 319 earbuds. They have a much broader frequency response range, and, as our tests demonstrated, pump out far better sound than Apple's oft-ridiculed ones. We listened to tunes from a variety of musical genres, and were impressed with the detail they offer. From hip-hop and electronica to acoustic and and metal, they only occasionally got muddy with densely orchestrated songs. We did have a slight fit issue, though; they're nearly the diameter of a dime, so if you've got small ears, you may want to opt for the K 313s. Still, the K319s are very comfortable, have an in-line volume slider, and, nicely, feature a raised dot on the stem of the left earbud for quickly identifying which one goes in which ear. They come with an extension cable and carrying case.
As nice as the AKGs sound, they still don't hold an ear candle to a great pair of canalphones. We urge, nay, compel you to trust us on this. If you want to have your head explode (in the good way), then hook yourself up with a pair of Shure SE210 canalphones. For a mere $85 to $90 online, you'll experience your music collection in a whole new way. Plus, they're exceptionally comfortable to wear (with a half-dozen different earpiece sleeves to suit any ear size). If you're looking for more bass punch, we also love Klipsch's $80 Image S4 earphones, which compare nicely. We know it's not your first choice, but we're sure one listen and you'll never look back. Which, um, you should always do when using them while walking on busy streets.

Can anyone suggest a pair that cancels out the lawnmower noise?
kscott6772Mar 17th 2010 3:53PM
I got a pair of cheap sound blocking headphones to go over my ear buds & they work great. I can ride on the lawn tractor or use my chain saw & still listen to my music. BY the way I got a pair of Sony ear buds for $15 that blow the original i-pod buds away.

A mere $85 to $90 WTF! Who comes up with prices? It costs them 0.25 cents to make them. With all the Czars out there, We need a Price Czar!

The only think I didn't like about my iPod earbuds was the wire. I throwed the iPod in a drawer, replaced my cellphone with an Curve, ordered my AL-903 BackBeat BT Stereo headset online. I listen to audiobooks 9 hours a night 6 nights a week. Hands free driving to/from work and while at work. Get rid of the wire altogether. . .it sucks.

I like the Acoustibuds. They're accordion-shaped, comfy, and they DON'T come out of your ear during any activity. The only ones I've found that work for me!

I will stand by the skullcandy's any day. They are very good in quality for the price you pay. You could find them at any radioshack for around $25 or skullcandy.com for more top of the line items. I have had the same pair for about 5 years now. I just bought another pair at a marshalls for $9 cuz price was just so cheap for its quality. They sound just as good as the regular ipod headphones maybe even a bit brighter, in my opinion.

I find skullcandy the best, and the earbuds effectively block out the rest of the world for prime listening.

If you go to Best Buy, there might be somewhere else that sells them, there is a brand called Skullcandy. Their earbuds are the best and they only cost around $21.99(depending on where buy buy them, Best buy being $21.99) They come with 3 sizes of earbuds, each easily removable just be taking it off the earbud and putting another size on it. They never come out of your ears Even if you're rockin' out to a loud song. I highly recommend these headphones.

TO REBECCA, IF YOU WANT SOME REALLY GOOD EARBUDS FOR AROUND 20 BUCKS AND WITH REALLY GOOD SOUND QUALITY FOR YOU OR YOUR SON, YOU SHOULD TRY THE PHILLIPS SHE5910. THEY HAVE A SMALL SUBWOOFER INSIDE, A BREATHER HOLE IN THE BACK OF THE BUD TO YOU GET EXCELLENT BASS FROM YOUR MUSIC. I ONLY USE THESE BECAUSE OF THE QUALITY AND THE PRICE. THE ONLY CATCH IS THAT THEY COME WITH DIFFERENT SIZE GUMMY TIPS FOR THE EAR CANAL WHICH FALL OFF PRETTY EASY AND THEY ONLY COME WITH 1 REPLACEMENT. BUT I FOUND THAT IF YOU ADD A LITTLE CRAZY GLUE TO THE RIM WHERE THE GUMMIES CONNECT, YOUR PROBLEM IS OVER. AND THE BEST PART IS THEY SELL THEM AT ANY WALL MART SO THEY ARE EASY TO FIND. YOU CAN LOOK AT THEM AT THE PHILLIPS WEBSITE. THEYRE THE BEST EARBUDS FOR THAT PRICE IN CASE YOU DONT HAVE A HUNDRED DOLLERS TO DROP AT THE DIME OF A HAT LIKE ME.

I hadn't read your comment before posting something about the Philips SHE9850. The Phillips SHE5910 are pretty good, especially for the price, and they allow you to hear what is happening around you at the same time. I found their bass, though, a little too strong, but you cannot beat the price and, like you said, you can find them at Wal-Mart. Just remember if you break them to keep the little rubber ear things (I liked your suggestion about using some glue to keep them on).

Anyone know of a single ear bud for those with only one working ear?
DJJayitoMar 17th 2010 3:48PM
Sure... TRY THEM, but don't forget, because APPLE is f-ing greedy, you will need a converter for NON APPLE headphones! Their SUNKEN headphone jack is a PAIN IN THE A55!
Jon ChaseMar 18th 2010 4:55PM
Hey DJJayito,
I believe all newer iPods and iPhones (that is, after the 1st generation iPhone) work with any old headphones with a standard 1/8-inch/3.5mm jack--Apple responded to the many complaints like yours, it seems!

and - like some have asked... If you are looking for a GREAT pair under 50 bucks... Head on over to sonystyle.com. I bought a pair YEARS AGO, under 40 bux that are amazing. The last sony pair I got... I got for FREE from sony and they are also amazing!

The koss sparkplugs that have been getting good user ratings must be a scam. I read the reviews and ordered a pair from Amazon. What I received was nothing like the reviews. Several reviews stated the bass was overpowering and even suggested a fix to lower the bass. All I can say is I wasted 11 bucks. The only way to get proper bass response was to cover the item with your fingers and push, and hold them in place. I think your fingers may get tired after awhile. Maybe the best way to buy something like this is to try them out first.

J3 from JLabs. They are about $30 at Amazon and they are the best I've heard. If you like treble rather than muddy, booming bass, these are incredible. I love treble and, unfortunately, my hearing has deteriorated a bit in the high range, but these bring back all the clarity I haven't heard in years. Be sure you break them in first.

I've used Skull Candy and really liked them, but for a couple dollars less (under $20), I bought JVC Marshmallows...I like them--they're soft and comfy--I usually hate things in my ears-- and the sound quality is good. I HATED the earbuds that came with my iPhone--I gave them to one of my students the 2nd day I tried to use them!!
