Microsoft Courier Details Leaked, iPad Looks on in Envy

We now know that the dual-screened electronic journal will be less than an inch thick, and that each screen will be roughly five inches by seven inches. By way of a stylus and multi-touch capacity, Courier will allow users to scribble notes, manipulate clipped photos and text, and sketch images. Courier will be built around NVIDIA's Tegra 2 chipset and run Windows CE 6, the same system powering the Zune HD and the upcoming Windows Phone 7 Series handsets.
In addition to serving as an e-reader, the Courier will have a camera for snapping photos and a headphone jack for media playback. Clearly, though, the Courier is meant to be used as a notepad and journal. It will have a built-in calendar, contacts organizer and to-do list, but its real value lies in its ability to clip, organize, and annotate information. There will also be a dedicated Web site for sharing your journals and allowing others to collaborate on them.
Pricing and release date are still not known, but if Microsoft can keep costs down, the Courier could spell trouble for a certain tablet device to be released in April.
Check out the videos below to see the Courier in action. [From: Engadget]

FAKE!!!!
Just look at 2.03 from the 2nd Vid. Apples Ipod nano showing up and that on a zune based OS? WTF....
FAkers get a life....
josahMar 6th 2010 12:05PM
2:03? It's the web browser. It's the preview mode of several different sites simultaneously. One of the sites just happens to be an Apple one. What's your point? A collaboration tool like this would naturally want to carry a platform independent message. After all, this is basically going to be a very sophisticated extension of MS Office (think One Note on crack), a suite available for both Windows and Mac OS.
Is it still a fake? Well, sort of. It's a concept video. It's produced. It's not a camera pointed at the actual product, as evidenced by the ghostly hand appearing and disappearing. But the video is 'real' in the sense that it leaked internally from Microsoft.

Anything with a interface this good should be real fake or not.

I actually think pen-based is a good idea. If I want a touch device (mostly phones) there are already too many out there with different purposes. The Courier could provide different functionalities and actually let me do some real work (not just anohter touch-screen device).
Also, If it has built-in OneNote support, it is the WINNER!. Impressions: http://bit.ly/microsoft-courier-reactions-info

I like how Microsoft thinks it's completely ok for people to rummage through websites and just take whatever photography they want for their own use. What kind of message is that?
jbrzoznoMar 6th 2010 4:12PM
i doubt that these were meant for widespread release. it was probably just destined for an internal presentation.

Sounds like some people can't read between the lines... They specifically put that Apple site on there on purpose. Notice how it says "small talk." They're implying that Apple's tablet is small talk. They're taking a jab at Apple, that's all it is. I found it quite clever actually, using Apple's own website to insult them.

Looks quite cool, but expensive and thick (twice the thickness of the iPad).
The killer feature of the iPad is the extremely low price for such a large multi-touch screen - It makes it tempting enough to have lying around the house even if you own a desktop or laptop computer.
With two screens, a hinge, stylus and camera etc, I think MS would struggle reaching the same price points on the Courier.
One of the biggest issues of course is that unlike with Windows, MS is the one with no apps having to start from scratch all over.
At least they're thinking creatively though. :-)

The clear message we can all get from the video is they still don't even have a prototype yet.
MS always push out speculation ahead of a real Apple release.

Why would the iPad look on in envy? You want to count with me the number of Apple iWork templates, designed by APPLE, that are shown in this video and represented as some cool new MS apps on this thing?
I mean come on, MS steals Apple's templates from the shipping version of iWork to demo a non-existant product when iWork is something the iPad, that will actually have running on it, and yet the ipad is supposed to envy it? I don't get it?

I'm a long time Apple Newton user, so I'm understandably intrigued by this device.
The size looks good: Meaningful productivity shouldn't be a problem, depending on the apps that will be available.
I wonder how they will stop the two screens from scratching one another, and how they will make the hinge sufficiently robust to stand up to the rigors of day to day use?
Now if handwriting recognition is native to the operating system, then we might have found the spiritual son of the Newton...

Still can't see anything here to be "envious" about. Looks like it could be a good niche device for creatives and note-takers - I'm certainly not saying no-one would use it or even prefer it to an iPad but the head-line bothers me .."looks on in envy"? Based on the demo it looks about 139,999 applications sort of an iPad/iPhone..

It's obviously old - Windows XP, Old website screenshots being used.. I just wish Microsoft would push this out. They spent SO much on R&D and then somehow it gets stuck! I'd pay double, hey, triple for this over an iPad.
tMar 8th 2010 6:00AM
Sure you would. But alas hell will freeze over before you see that courier. It doesn't even exist. Engadget showed that thing months ago. It is a total render. But don't worry, the ipad devs have an ipad SDK and they'll be able to do what ever you saw in that video with a REAL poduct. Ha ha!

If this turns into vaporware I will harm myself.
skypenorwoodMar 8th 2010 6:11AM
Available 4 April 2010 for only $498. Apple is stunned! Back to the drawing boards. Microsoft proves that you don't need anything but a legion of idiots pimping products to spread FUD. What a load of crap this article is.
borntalentMar 9th 2010 10:11AM
This looks ALOT better than the I-Pad.
I still can't get over the fact that the Iphone originally could not use "Picture Text" messages. lolol thats bad.
indyf16Mar 9th 2010 12:24PM
Wow. It's sleek, pretty, stylish, small enough to fit in my purse...cool. Just when I was getting ready to buy an Ipad. I'm a woman, I'm entitled to change my mind. Thanks Microsoft...finally.
p.s.- does it fold in half?...that would just be the icing on the cake for me.
BPerryMar 9th 2010 1:34PM
It sure looks like an interesting concept and a product that would have much more usefulness than the iPad. I wouldn't call it an iPad "killer", since the cult of Steve Jobs acolytes will still prefer to buy Apple and claim it's the best without the facts to back up the claim. It should play video, including Flash to put a real dent in the iPad potential market. It is interesting to see how hopped up and anxious the Macsnobs are over what might or might not be a real product.

Nice post. BTW people do you know that the iPhone SDK 3.2 Beta 4 has been released and is now available. Read more over here,
