Highlights from this morning's other big tech headlines....
- The iPad's official release date has finally been announced, and the highly anticipated gadget will be available for purchase April 3rd, with pre-orders beginning March 12th. - The Knight Foundation has named the winners of this year's Shorty awards, which go to Twitter's greatest tweeters. The majority of the recipients were apparently fictional personalities, as various characters from 'Ad Men' and 'Sesame Street' accepted prizes (through 140-characters-or-less speeches, of course). - Sony is apparently delving into the handheld marketplace. According to the Wall Street Journal, the company is developing gadgets, including a smartphone, that will allow users to download and play video games. - Google and Viacom have been embroiled in a corporate brawl for several years, and the current court case seems to be progressing rapidly. - 'American Idol' experimented with a new social networking strategy this season by actively promoting the contestants' personal Twitter, Facebook and MySpace accounts. FOX, though, without any sort of indication why, has now consolidated all of those individual accounts into generic show pages. [From: Mashable and The Wall Street Journal and USA Today]
- The Windows Phone 7 Series was just recently announced, and details about the smartphones' capabilities are steadily emerging. Perhaps the biggest news today is that the 7 Series won't be backward compatible with current Windows Mobile apps, constituting a big gamble for Microsoft. [From: Engadget]
