Microsoft to XP Users: 'Don't Press F1'

A recently discovered vulnerability is disrupting how Windows XP handles VBScripts that are used to load Help files. Hackers could disguise malicious code as a Windows Help file (with the extension ".hlp"), and then launch a pop-up window prompting users to press F1 for help. Pressing F1 would in fact load the malicious file, and execute the code, thus infecting a PC. Fortunately, the vulnerability does require user interaction, so those who refrain from using Help (or who turn it off entirely) will remain safe. Details for how to turn off Help can be found here.
The vulnerability applies to IE6, IE7, and IE8 on Windows XP. Vista and Windows 7 users, meanwhile, are unaffected.
Microsoft is currently working to patch the flaw, but has not announced a time by which to expect a fix. This is just one more reason to join the 21st century, and leave XP behind as the quaint memory of a bygone era that it is. [From: Microsoft, via: Computer World]

Excuse my ignorance, but hasn't Bill Gates retired entirely from MicroSoft?
My first PC had to be eventually scrapped simply due to a lack of capability to add any meaningful memory. Replaced with a Dell Dimension 2400 with XP. Although I've since had to increase memory, it does exactly what I want it to.
Do I use it a lot? I've worn most of about eight letters off of the keyboard.
Why upgrade when I am quite satisfied with what I have now?

Just simply don't use IE...it's NEVER been a solid web browser. XP is a terrific platform for most uses. I still have it, plan on keeping it and simply will not get Vista or Vistalight...I mean Windows 7. I use Firefox and this article is total hype (read "crap") trying to scare people into rushing out and buying a new OS.

Thank g-d for my mac. I use Windows for certain work things ( love parallels, runs Windows on my mac smooth as silk), and I use all different Windows OS at work. And XP (Pro) is SOOO much better, more reliable than Vista and 7, software always works, no constant requests for additional log ins, and much less crashing. Shame on switched for recommending users upgrade for such a small issue.

When is MS ever going to design a product that isn't a sieve for mischievous criminal type behavior?

I'll still take XP anyday over Vista, the F1 key is a minor flaw compared to Vista's
flaws. We still get XP updates for 4 more years, I doubt if Vista will be around that long.
