Lara Croft Trades Raiding Tombs to Streets as Brits Name Way After Her

She has starred in countless video games, been portrayed by Angelina Jolie on the big screen, and now, Lara Croft has a street named after her. Using an online poll, citizens in the British town of Derby voted to name a new stretch of road after the virtual vixen of 'Tomb Raider' fame.
According to the BBC News, 89-percent of the 27,000 votes were for Lara Croft, who was created in Derby by developer Core Design. The namesake of Lara Croft Way beat out other notable locals like soccer player Steve Bloomer, astronomer John Flamsteed and engineer George Sorocold. (There's no arguing who is more famous around the world.) Derby's planning and transportation cabinet member Lucy Care told the BBC that, while she isn't a big gamer, she doesn't have a problem with the $55 million road being named after a video game character. "She was created in Derby and deserves to stand alongside some of the more traditional icons of the city," she told the BBC.
We couldn't have said it better. Derby should be proud of its most famous citizen (even if she is composed of pixels). Just think about all those fanboys who will want a picture with that street sign. [From: BBC News, via: Geekosystem]
